“One night in "Palmy"”
Reviewed November 25, 2012

On a trip to Palmerston North, to retrieve our son from university, we booked a stay at the Kiwi Studios Motel. It was nice that they offered some accommodations for a family that had three adults. We found the executive room that we booked to be clean and spacious. The room even had the extra convenience of an in-room washer and dryer. We did find the rooms to be a bit chilly and could not figure out how to turn up the heat. We did discover the next day that the bed was equipped with an electric heating pad that may have made sleeping a bit more comfortable.

The parking area was tight however we always were able to park in the car park area. The manager was friendly and this was a nice motel that I would stay at again.

The Kiwi Studios motel is in a very good location, just 2 minutes walk from the centre of Palmerston North. The motel carpark was full when I arrived (even though I arrived early afternoon) so I had to park around the corner on the next side street. It wasn't far away but it was inconvenient. It rained a little during our stay so it was annoying having to walk an extra 50 metres to the car. The price you pay for being so close to the City centre.

Reception was friendly and helpful.

We had booked a 2 bedroom unit but were told that there were none available and asked if a 1 bedroom unit be OK. I said it was and we were charged $35 less for the smaller room.

The room was a little dark and it was also on the small side. The photos on Trip Advisor must be of the Executive room. Other than that, there were no problems and the room was clean.

Our room cost NZD $130 which for 3 people (and being so close to the city centre), I thought was OK.

If I am ever in Palmerston North again, I would consider staying at the Kiwi Studios motel again. However, I would try to get a room that wasn't so dark. And I would get a unit with a bit more room.

I originally booked a 2 bedroom apartment and a studio room for a travelling party of 5 at short notice (4 hours) due to a change in plans. From the start of the phone call to the completion of the stay Shelley, the manager was excellent. She did all she could to accommodate us by taking into consideration our toddler (safety) as well as my mother who has serious physical disabilities; by making sure both rooms were appropriate in comfort and needs. As we were in Palmerston North for family issues, she empathised with our situation and offered a small but appreciated discount off their rates to help us out. Throughout our stay she was friendly, courteous and professional and I cannot speak highly enough of her and her team members level of service.

In terms of the room (2 bedroom apartment), it epitomises value for money and for the money - class. Beautiful full bathroom, kitchen with all the mod cons including dishwasher and table settings for 6 (or is it 8?) and a large lounge suite. The main bedroom was spacious, with ample wardrobe space (to store your EziBuy purchases in!) a comfortable queen bed and power points positioned wonderfully for charging the iPad next to it to take advantage of the unlimited free, super-fast wifi, which lets face it, is a HUGE bonus when it comes to accommodation in NZ and something which we appreciate coming from a rural town.

My folks who had the ground floor studio room testified to a comfortable, warm, quiet sleep and the room having everything they needed for the evening for less than $99 for the night.

We all ordered the kiwi-lite breakfast the next morning which consisted of generous helpings of spaghetti, toast, jams etc, OJ, scrambled eggs and hash browns for only $13 - compared with the $24 dollars we are regularly charged for continental breakfasts in WLG or AKL for work, value once again.

We have since stayed at Kiwi Studios three times as we have decided to make it our accommodation of choice when staying in Palmerston North, a regular event as my husband is mainly based there for work.

KS's is well placed for shopping, cinemas and fast food (and real food) with delicious roasts (Sunday Roasts) Thai (Phnom Penh) pasta and kebabs (Cafe Emimen) literally 26 steps from the motel. If you're got the kids - simply add another 54 steps to Burger King to keep them satisfied.

KS doesn't look like much from the outside, the parking can be quite tight on busy weekend nights and the central location could put some with a delicate ear off - but don't let this deter you - it is awesome.

Our 2 families had the chance to stay in the 2 executive rooms that this property has.
We had athe joing door opened up as it was like being in your own home.
A very well appointed one at that.
Plus the convenience of having 2 fully equiped bathrooms including corner spa baths
Thank you Shelley for a wondeful weekend

Kiwi Studios is centrally located. We could walk to the Convention Centre. Shops and a variety of Takeaways are close or around the corner. We were very surprised when we checked in because we got two rooms with a joining door. Outstanding deal for $130 per night, lucky us. It was fabulous to have own room and bathroom after long days at a conference. I can highly recommend this Motel and will certainly return when in need of accommodation In Palmerston North. For fabulous coffee visit O'Briens Irish Cafe and Lunch Bar. It is a upmarket Subway but much nicer. Very accommodating when you need a coffee in the mornings, they don't mind opening up before.

I just got back from a business trip to Palmerston North. We got a 2 bedroom apartment for $160/night. The value was outstanding. The room was ultra modern, bright and clean. The kitchen seemed new and well equipped. It had a really nice brown leather couch and glass dining table. Both rooms had en-suite bathrooms. It also had a flat screen TV and they even give you a half litre container of milk upon checkin. Presumably this was for tea, coffee or cereal in the morning. The woman at the front desk was very pleasant and helpful in recommending a good spot for dinner. They also provided free newspapers and WIFI. The location was central and everything was within walking distance.

Basically walking distance to the town and close to a great restaurant. Rooms were alright but the room we stayed in being upstairs had a funny sloping ceiling and the actual window was in part of the ceiling. Therefore being winter it meant that the cold air fell on 1 half of the bed. Also the heat pump in the bedroom did not work. However they did supply us with another heater for the room. Service was great and friendly
