We stayed at Gilgara in July 2012 and it is just beautiful. The manager Elaine is super friendly and approachable, makes you feel very welcome and comfortable. We stayed in one of the Garden Suites and I couldn't fault it. Beautiful decor and loved the split level. The bathroom is huge with a big spa bath, the bed is located in the center of the room which adds a really lovely feel. The outdoor area is pleasant overlooking the gardens. Loved this place and would definitiley go back, well priced compared to other places in the area of the same standard.

Pros:
beautiful and peaceful
nice smell of bush
very nice rooms
we saw some Kangaroos in the lawn in the evening
Cons :
No curtains in the room , need eyes cover to sleep (provided)
We did not feel the genuine nice hospitality that is so common in this region from the hosts , the atmosphere was a bit stressed. But we might just have gotten them in a bad couple of days unfortunately, as other reviews are normally very positive about the hosts.

Room Tip: Rooms outside themain house were great!

My husband and I stayed at Gilgara Retreat for a wonderful 4 days, we were warmly greeted by Elaine upon our arrival who made our stay extremely joyful. We stayed in one of their Garden Suites with a wonderful view of the property. Nothing was to much trouble for Elaine and Steven who advised us of places we should visit during our stay, for this we were never disappointed.
We would highly recommend Gilgara Retreat. Thankyou Elaine and Steven.

Room Tip: Any room would not disappoint.

We spent 3 nights in the very modern Garden Suite at Gilgara Retreat with 2 young children. The suite is self-contained, very close to nature with a beautiful bathroom, kitchenette to cook simple meals, very comfy bed and a sofa bed for our children. It comes with a DVD player which was great to keep our kids occupied thru the long evenings.
Elaine is a lovely host who took time to recommend great places for our meals and to visit. Trust her, she knows the place well. She even lend us a cooler bag to store our grocery shopping from Coles at the nearby Margaret River Town, while we headed out for dinner. Gilgara is very near to the Sunflower Animal Farm and many other wineries and restaurants. We will definitely return to this lovely accommodation for our next trip.

We stayed here for three nights as part of a Cape to Cape walk. Arriving tired and dirty from the track, we were warmly welcomed by Elaine. We stayed in the main house, and certainly needed to shower before using the beautiful lounge rooms with their lovely white lounges! Our room was very comfortable, if a little small. Bathroom was delightful with beautiful soft towels. Stephen was very obliging and drove us to and from the track each day as requested. A highlight was the meals prepared by Elaine each night. We enjoyed a variety of delicious home cooked meals with other guests as well as Elaine and Stephen. Elaine gave us great advice on the local area. A lovely, peaceful place to stay in beautiful surroundings.

My husband has already penned his review but I want to give my side of it. We stayed in a Garden Suite for 5 nights in April 2012 and at first, being a city girl, I was not used to the silence of the night. Waking up to the views of the beautiful estate was breathtaking. Our kitchenette was very well equipped with a large fridge, freezer, toaster, coffee maker, electric hobs, microwave etc so each morning we made a big breakfast using the local cheeses, organic eggs, fresh breads etc. We sat at our dining table with the incredible view of the countryside, we opened up the patio doors so our whole room was open to the outside, and so the day began! Our Garden Suite had a huge bathroom with sunken bath which was actually a jacuzzi, very large shower and lots of fresh fluffy towels. Elaine was kind enough to leave candles, slippers, bath oils etc
The Garden Suites do not have internet so we visited the main house every day to download our emails and skype the kids. Elaine was always very helpful, she was happy to make recommendations and help us make restaurant bookings, she advised us where to go and even what was good on the menu. In the living room there's a lot of books on the local area plus magazines and a cupboard full of DVD's if you wish to borrow them! Nothing was too much trouble for Elaine, even as we waved farewell on our last day, Steven told us to drop in at the Eagle brewery on our way up to the Lighthouse (which we did and it was excellent). I'm usually someone who likes to discover places by myself but this is one of those times I listened because Elaine obviously knows the area like the back of her hand, she knows so much but she doesn't force it on you, she is sensitive and kind with a heck of a personality.
We would highly recommend Gilgara in every respect, it's only a 10 min drive from the Margaret River town and a short drive to all the main wineries. We found our stay very relaxing and comfortable, we slept the best we've ever slept and we would definitely like to return with our children in the future.

Room Tip: Garden Suites are really good if you like to have your own breakfast and head out for the day. They...
