Recommended length of visit: 2-3 hours
Owner description: Lake Cave is a stunning crystal wonderland and the only cave in the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge with a permanent lake. It acts as a mirror of infinite reflections that is truly magical. The cave is renowned for the ‘Suspended Table’ – a five tonne column of calcite that hangs from the ceiling just a few centimetres above the lake. The precinct features impressive retail, interpretative and cafe facilities. Located 25 kilometres south of Margaret River.

We chose this cave out of the many caves in Margaret River and we were pleased with our choice. Beware though, there's 300 steps you need to go down to get there and you need to get back up. Plenty of opportunities to get some amazing pictures...a must see!

“Small pretty cave with reflections in the water”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 26, 2012

Be warned that there is quite a few steps. The cave itself is small. The whole tour took around 50 mins only. The reflections in the pool (a big stretch to call it a lake) are nice, but to me it was one of those things that look a lot nicer in the brochures than it does in real life. The guide said that the water had receeded somewhat recently due to dry conditions & this does detract from the cave's main feature & probably why I felt it didnt look the same as in the pictures. For photographers, be warned that they do not allow you to take a tripod, but there were opportunities to put the camera on the walkway to get a shot at low iso. All up for 1 person at $22 I thought it was ok, but wouldn't call it a must see & I would probably be dissapointed if I had paid for a whole family to visit

“Journey to the centre of the earth: and back!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 24, 2012

There is nothing wrong with the cave itself - although small it has some good features - but the presentation needs a lot of improvement.
For a start, the steps. It is only after you have parted with your money ($22 each) that you see a small notice about there being 300 steps and some physical exertion MAY be required. Don't you believe it - physical exertion is DEFINITELY required. Once you have climbed all the way down, the only way out is back up the same steps. My husband & I are in our late 60s and the cashier didn't think to mention this.
Next, the guide. He may have known about caves but his communication skills need upskilling in a big way.
Finally, cameras. I have been in a few public caves over the years and I have never found one before that allows visitors to take flash photos: and for very good reason - it absolutely ruins the experience for everybody else.
This experience quite put us off visiting any other caves in the area.
A word of advice, if you want a really first-class cave experience, visit Waitomo in New Zealand.
You wont regret it.

Dear Beauvoir1,

Thank you for visiting Lake Cave and for taking the time to provide comments on your experience.

With regards to the stairs, we try not to pre-judge the abilities of our guests based on age, size, or fitness, because we find that the overwhelming majority of guests navigate the stairs without much bother. There is certainly a bit of puffing and joking about elevators and escalators, but real problems are extremely rare. We have a large sign on our counter, as you mention, warning of the physical requirements involved on the tour. If guests express any concerns about the number of stairs, we advise them to step outside onto our stunning viewing deck, from which one can view the stairs.

You mention that we allow flash-photography in the cave. This is an interesting point. Lake Cave undergoes constant rigorous environmental assessment on a wide range of criteria, and it has been established that flash-photography poses no threat to the natural ecosystem within the cave. This is in contrast to other caves around the world that contain light-sensitive fauna, such as the glow worms found in Waitomo Cave. We try to manage and limit the use of flash photography, to prevent it from becoming a disturbance to other guests, by requesting that it be done only on designated platforms. Your feedback will certainly be passed on to remind our guides of the importance of this.

We take great pride in the quality and friendliness of our guiding staff and so your feedback about the communication skills of the guide on your tour is disturbing. If you are able to return at some point please let us know and we will ensure that you have a top quality tour and experience.

Thanks again, and safe travels.

“If you choose one cave, choose this one!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 23, 2012

Fantastic experience and great oppurtunity for photos. The guide was very informative and the light show was very cool. The only part that sucked was the quadrillion stairs you had to reclimb to get back out! on a 40 degree day i must say that was a chore! But all part of the fun!

an absolute must, beautiful underground lake and interesting tour. Bring bottled water on hot days for the climb back up.
