“"Beautiful Bushland Break"”
Reviewed December 1, 2013

My husband, my sister and myself totally enjoyed our stay. Our cottage was extremely clean, modern, well designed with the bedrooms being at either end. Cottage was well equipped with more than we expected. We all agreed the beds were just so comfy and we appreciated the generous sized pillows also. Great ceiling fans too. A very private, peaceful, tranquil setting while not at all feeling isolated. A lovely short drive into town. Loved going on the walk trail seeing the birds, rabbits and especially the baby Joey and it's Mum. Nice little touches providing the bird seed, starter breakfast and a very thoughtful line and pegs. Thankyou Gail, you made us feel very welcome, are very cheery and helpful and provided useful local information (loved The White Elephant). Also enjoyed reading info pack and property's history. Bussells Bushland Cottages is truly very good value and we would (and have) Highly Recommend. Know there is heaps more we could say but for now, Thanks again from all of us.

Room Tip: We had cottage 5 but think any cottage would be just as lovely.

I get very great pleasure from reading guest reports as it reinforces the fact that our efforts are appreciated. We're a gazetted "Land for Wildlife" property and I'm constantly delighted by sightings of animals around the property. It shows that the environment (for us at least) is healthy. Thank you so much for your enthusiasm and we do hope to see you again, in the not too distant future.

Great place to stay. Close enough to town but far enough away to have the peace and quiet we wanted in a lovely rural setting. Gail, the Manager, was informative and helpful in every way possible and we had a lovely mini break. We'll be back again.

Thank you for your kind comments. As you will have seen, we've made an initial attempt at installing Wi-Fi. It's a bit flaky because our wonderful trees block clear passage, however our communications guru is coming back to install a transmitter at a higher point so that we can (hopefully) resolve this matter. And we've also received approval of an 1800 mm X 3000 mm rammed-earth entry statement, to replace the old wooden sign. So, you'll see more improvements when you next visit.

My husband and I have been staying at Bussells Bushland Cottages since 1994. The present owner has upgraded all the cottages in the last few years and they are just the best place to stay. If there is one thing (and there are many more) that tips the balance, it is that they are separated and not right next door to each other. This is not the case for a lot of the cottage accommodation in Margaret River. It is a real bonus to have privacy in such a lovely rural setting. The cottages themselves are cleaned to within an inch of their lives and have everything that you need to self cater and sit outside with the stars and wild life for company. Nothing is overlooked. You even get bird food for the numerous 28s and greedy Bronzewings. It is truly magical to us and now our grandchildren share it too ! Lovely !

Room Tip: Book early !

Thank you for your kind comments....we're always delighted to hear that we're meeting the needs of returning guests. We have some big surprises for when you next visit as there's new signage to the cottages and along the walk trails; and we've succeeded in installing Wi-Fi to all cottages. We're now waiting for approval of a new rammed-earth entry statement which, hopefully, will be in place before the end of the year. Thanks again and we look forward to your return to our delightful bush block.

My partner and I stayed here in September in a 2 bedroom cottage, after reading all the excellent reviews. The location is good - fairly close to town but very quiet in a rural setting. The cottage was small but OK for just the two of us. The wood fire (and the large supply of free firewood) was wonderful and made the cottage cosy as it was a cold and windy few days. There was a very helpful compendium in the cottage with lots of local information provided.
There was a power outage during our stay and as there was no mobile coverage or wifi in the cottage and the radio reception was very poor we had no way of finding out how long the power might be off. I went up to the office to enquire but the office was closed - only opens for 2 hours a day from 8am to 10am - but even a note outside the office would have been appreciated as it was about 12 hours before the power came back on.
The kitchen was well stocked with a good variety of pots/utensils etc but the non-stick frying pan definitely needed replacing as it was worn through to its aluminium base, so we didn't use it.
Despite following the instructions provided, we were unable to get the tv to work and, yes, the power was back on by this time!
A lock on the toilet door would be good.
There were no accessible power points in the bedroom to plug in a clock radio.
The seed left for us to feed the birds was a nice touch but the bird feeder was totally clogged with old moldy seed and green algae water.
The "laundry" was under an open lean-to at the back of the manager's house and didn't look too clean. Could be OK to use on a hot summers day but miserable in winter - more suited to back-packer accommodation.
For the price, $200 per night for the two of us, we found Bussells to be a bit average.

The downside of living in a forest is that the trees make mobile accessibility difficult. That said, we're presently in discussions to install Wi-Fi. This is no easy task because of the trees and the distance between cottages, however we're hopeful that a series of booster stations will enable us to win this battle. As regards the "laundry," it's a facility we provide behind the manager's residence so that we can control water usage (this being a precious resource on a rural property of this nature). Following a winter which has dumped over 1500mm of rain on us, we currently have staff installing new signage, tidying the driveway and clearing the walk trails. I acknowledge that we could have additional power outlets in the bedrooms and will have this attended before year's end. You will have seen from the fit-out of our cottages that we're committed to constant improvement. Hopefully, these additional improvements will satisfy you when you next visit.

We stayed for 3 nights, and enjoyed every minute of our time here. The cottages are quiet and cosy. The wood burning fire I the lounge is lovely, and essential in colder weather. The kitchen is well set up and equipped for self-catering. There is also a BBQ available, although we did not use this due to rainy weather.

The owner clearly shows pride I her establishment, and provides guests with infertile not only about local amenities, but also local birds and trees that you will see within the grounds.

The cottages are a short drive from Margaret river, and therefore it is easy to access the supermarket and restaurants

We stayed at Bushland Cottages for 5 nights and it must be the only time we have visited Margaret River and never went out once in the evening for dinner. The cottage was so comfortable, the owners really have thought of everything from all the pots and utensils for your little kitchen to the bird seed left for you to give to all the feathered visiters you will get day and night. The kangaroos really did come right up to the cottage and we had a little possum that came every evening to peep into our doorway !
The little breakfast pack they leave for your 1st morning is a really nice touch, the owners are very friendly and obliging and have great tips of places to go and visit. We even got a complimentary bottle of wine as we booked for more than 3 nights ( delicious )
The potbelly stove was a welcome relief when we got home from our day time excursions and made the chilly evenings so warm and cozy you really won't want to leave.
The bedroom was a little on the small side but still adequate, the pillows and bed were extremely comfortable.
The best thing for us though was the privacy, there are only a small number of cottages and they are spaced far enough apart in the tree's so you feel very secluded, it was very peaceful and relaxing.
The only small thing we could mention ( on a not even negative note because it was so small ), we would of appreciated a change of towels and sheets as we were there for nearly a week.
Saying that, it did not spoil our stay in any way, we had a fantastic time and will definately be coming back to stay for a winter get away when we next visit.

We stayed for 3 nights in Bussells in chilly August. We loved our time there - Gail was very welcoming and extremely helpful with her tips for the area. The cottage was clean, comfy, and very well equipped. We loved the BBQ outside (though it was a bit chilly to sit outside, we did one night!), and the fire which kept the cottage warm in the evenings. The bathroom was spotlessly clean and the showers fortunately hot! Beds were comfy, extra blankets very welcome, and the only (very minor) downside was the slightly dusty pillows (inevitably with an indoor fire) - but I am a dust allergy sufferer, so only I noticed.
The best thing about the cottages is their location in the bush - each morning we'd walk out and around and spot kangaroos, kookaburras and parrots. Bird seed was provided which gave the kids the thrill of feeding the parrots, bronzewings, and even one morning, a friendly bandicoot. Each cottage is set apart from the others so they feel nicely private. And this just a short drive from Margaret River town and the Caves Rd to access beaches, forests, wineries, etc. We loved it and would highly recommend it to anyone.
