What we had hoped to be a quite and relaxing weekend turned out to be a disaster. We had driven several hours from Perth to arrive at an old cottage with unkept grounds. The smell of dead ants hit us as we walked into the cottage. On close inspection there were dead and live ants in every room and even in the bed. We reluctantly had to stay that night as we could not find alternate accommodation, but we left the next day. We were charged 5 star rates for 2 star quality. Check before you stay.

Our family of 3 - including a 4yr old - stayed at Harmony Forest for 3 nights at end of Oct. We loved this adorable cottage in the forest. After a disappointing stay at a 'luxurious' chalet near a beach 10mins away, we were delighted with Harmony for the following reasons: 1) the decor is rustic. i don't think this is bad taste: they have purposely decorated it in a homey mountain cottage style which i loved. they don't advertise themselves as being luxurious (like the other place we stayed at) and you should be prepared for that. Still, the cottage was well-equipped and you can tell the owners put a lot of thought into making guests feel comfortable.
2) the cottages are not close to each other, which guarantees privacy.
3) you can easily spot quite a lot of kangaroos close to the cottage, which was a delight for our child.
4) you get a washing machine in the bathroom with detergent! large drying rack too.
5) the heater was great and much needed (we live in singapore so the evenings were very cold for us)
There was one thing that was a bit of a problem: ants! not all around the cottage but by the door: every morning and every time we got back to the cottage after being out, there were tons of them by the door (mostly dead i think!). we had to sweep them out each time with the provided tall broom. It was a bit of a pain but not unbearable. I'm not sure if this was due to the heater that was on all night or the porch light which we couldnt figure out how to turn off....
Anyway, still, we had a very pleasant stay at Harmony Forest. The surroundings were also beautiful and peaceful.

If you want to get away from everything then this is the place. I haven't slept so soundly for a longtime. No TV, no phone and no Internet mixes with the bush setting to help relax. However it is time for a little modernisation. The stero is old and the volume didn't work and the fittings were just dated.

You can't be shy as the spa and the shower lacks any curtains. You can't see the other chalets but it is a bit confronting.

We weekend stay at Harmony Forest was wonderful. The cottages are very secluded giving you a feeling you are the only people there. Watching all the bird life from the spa overlooking the bush was wonderful. A great place for a couple to get away from it all but if retail therapy is needed then Margaret River is only a short drive away

Harmony Forest is in a magical setting and you really feel relaxed when you stay here. Yes the furniture is a bit dated and the tv is tiny for watching a DVD on but that is part of the experience. People should keep it in mind that you are staying in a forest and so there is wildlife! That's what I enjoyed about it. Seeing the kangaroos from your bedroom window in the morning is a real high light. We had a lovely few relaxing days here.

My other half and I have stayed at Harmony Forest four or five times over the last five years - we even got married at one of the cottages (an elopement) five and a half years ago, so we are regulars now.

That said, I think it's unlikely we will return. While it is lovely to be so isolated, it's just a little bit too far out from the Margaret River centre of town for us, given we don't cook when we're away. If you cook then it would probably be different but the distance factor is just a bit too noticeable.

The cottages are all definitely in need of a revamp, they haven't been updated in our years of visiting, and even on our first visit were noticeably dated.

That said, the cottages are clean and comfortable, and the location is absolutely stunning - you can't find a place more secluded and private, and not having access to the outside world (no TV, no mobile access) means you really do get to unwind properly. Margaret River scenery at its very best.

Don't get us wrong, Harmony Forest is alright. You can't fault the seclusion, peace and quiet and location, it's just that the cottages are pretty dated and in need of an upgrade and freshening up. It's a bit like going to your grandma's house, as in they're homely but in a yesteryear sort of way. That may be the point of them but if you're looking for something a bit more modern then look for somewhere else.
