“Well worth considering for a short stay.”
Reviewed March 9, 2014

A great spot, centrally located on the town's main street. Friendly staff changed my allocated room without demurring when I wanted to change from a single to a double (room 16). The room contained two single beds and was spotlessly clean with a TV, small refrigerator and tea/coffee making facilities. It didn't have a/c but there was a pedestal fan which did the job- not sure how you'd go if it was mid-summer though. The room was served by a communal ablutions block just down the corridor and this was, without a doubt, one of THE cleanest and best presented I've seen at any hotel. It's a credit to the staff who obviously take real pride in such things. I got a basic breakfast included in the tariff and was welcome to eat it in the charming olde-worlde restaurant on the ground floor. A couple of locals told me the food is the best in town but I didn't manage to make it. It's a beautiful looking building a close to all local amenities such as shops and restaurants. It's affordable and I'll be booking in there again next time I visit Kal!

Room Tip: Check to see if yours has air-conditioning.

We had dinner here after reviewing Trip Advisor. We were not disappointed but amazed at how fabulous the food was. One of the best meals we have had. The service was very good and the Staff lovely. We would go out of our way to eat here again

Room Tip: We did not stay here, only had a meal

We spent a night at this great architectural hotel. The rooms are nice and clean, very airy with high ceilings. Not dark or gloomy. The rooms are also the original size from the day. No en suite bathroom you do need to hike down the hall. The ladies bathroom was at the farthest end of the hall and only 2 shower stalls and toilets great lighting though. Men had 3 stalls and the bathroom was much larger plus a shorter distance from our room.
We had the room in the front so had the balcony overlooking Main Street. Gets pretty noisy with motorbikes and if they have live music in the bar.
It was worth the one night even though I was not crazy about hiking down the long hallway.
The shared bathroom was very clean. The shower stalls and the toilet area. Not sure about the other historic hotel bathroom situation but it was worth the one night.
Breakfast included not much of a breakfast enough to get you started. Bakery across the street. Hotel also had a very good restaurant but fills up quick so need reservation or just eat at the hotel pub same food just noisy.

We specifically requested a balcony room and were amazed when we found we were actually located inside one of the turrents complete with dome and stained glass. It was like staying in a movie set. The whole building was immaculately maintained and spotlessly clean witout sacrificing any of the history and charm of the place. We loved the creaky floorboards in the passages. It was great watching the activity in Hannan St from our balcony with great views of all the historic buildings. Very convient for walking to station, museum, shops, tourist bureau and restraunts

Room Tip: Great view from front balcony rooms

we arrived on a Friday evening, our room was very basic with shared bathroom but vey clean, we thought it would be good having the room at the front of the hotel with doors opening onto the balcony, not so good, a band was playing right under our room and sounded like they were in the room with us, it didn't finish playing until 12:30am and we eventually fell asleep around one, only to be woken at 5am by street cleaners! Not very happy but was assured that Saturday nights were different and there would be no bands playing, completely true, we have never seen such a dead place on a Saturday night. the continental breakfast consisted of cereal and toast, with tea or coffee on Saturday morning and Sunday we had a treat, plums and yoghurt !
all in all it was a very basic hotel but clean and cheap, you really do get what you pay for !

Room Tip: Pick a room at the back of the hotel if you want a decent nights sleep

This is a nice estabishment. 112 years of character. The food is great, the rooms clean and beds comfortable. The staff were helpful and pleasant. It is close to everything you need within easy walking distance. I thought it was good value for money and I would stay at the York again.

We were very keen to see what Kalgoorlie had to offer visitors, so after research chose this lovely old hotel, and booked directly with them. We arrived on an early morning flight, and had to wait until somebody was around to let us in. We were shown to a lovely old fashioned room overlooking the wide main street, with a huge balcony from which to observe the passing scene. The bathroom was down the corridor and across a landing. The building itself was full of wonderful touches, from the gorgeous carved stairway to the old time, very welcoming bar.
Amazingly , for a hotel in a very arid region, there was a pool in the rear garden, with deck chairs and umbrellas- a very welcome respite after the heat of a day sightseeing.
Breakfast, included in the room rate, was fairly basic, but adequate, and there were several places to eat once we'd asked around . There was lots to see in Kalgoorlie, depending how adventurous you wanted to be. We visited the huge modern gold mine, with trucks looking like children's toys deep down int he Big Pit, The Gold Museum was fascinating, allowing a mine shaft visit, and the chance to see a gold pour. There was even a brothel in town that did a conducted tour. Kalgoorlie really reminded us of all the westerns we'd enjoyed, and the York just added to the atmosphere with its turretted building and shady arcaded entrance. All that was missing was a horse tied up to a hitching rail!

Room Tip: Choose one of the two overlooking the street.
