“The Rose - says it all”
Reviewed April 18, 2011

We booked this through the local tourism office in Bunbury - because it was cheap and walking distance to restaurants etc. Very pleasantly surprised with a recently refurbished room which was crisp clean and nicely done out. The receptionist was a star, happy in her work and extremely helpful. The Rose itself is a beautifully restored pub which was a pleasure just to wander through, dinner was well cooked if the menu was a little limited, the service great with a great selection of wine and beer on tap. Breakfast the next morning was good value. All in all this was a little gem we found in Bunbury. Bunbury itsel fwas a delight and well worth visiting.

Room Tip: the local Visitor Centre is always helpful

Our guide book recommended the hotel rooms at the Rose Hotel but as they were full we opted for one of the motel rooms instead. Our holiday was not off to the best start when the loo in our room refused to flush! However the staff dealt with this promptly and courteously and we were moved to a new room, with a slightly newer looking loo. I have to agree with a previous reviewer that the motel rooms were extremely dated (rather brown) and a bit gloomy. Some of the bathroom tiles were coming loose. Having said that, it was clean enough and we slept ok on the first night. On the second night some guys were talking outside until very late and we couldn't sleep at all for ages. We didn't have breakfast as it seemed a bit expensive considering the standard of the establishment. Maybe staying in the actual hotel is nicer but our experience was only ok.

I took my wife, 15 yo daughter, mother in law and myself. We ordered the calamari and chips, a Caesar salad (which arrived as a chicken caesar), a seafood basket and chips and I had a steak burger and fries. With drinks the bill came to around $80+.
Now I know it's a bar menu so i'll take that onboard when I make my comments.
Is there a difference between fries and chips? Apparently not.
The calamari and chips was a pass mark with 6 squid rings and a handful of chips you would find at the bottom of your family freezer. My mil was well satisfied with her seafood basket but would have preferred less batter, however the Caesar chicken was rubbish - flooded with dressing and with lettuce past it's use by date, however the chicken although edible but did not look appetizing. Now as for my steak sandwich - the meat was probably 3mm thick and cooked until black on the hidden side and looked good on the up side with 1 piece of tomato and some very burnt onion, lettuce and a soggy bottom bun. Need I say more. I am not sure if this is the usual service or quality but we will be unlikely to spend $on a meal at The Rose again.

The hotel is in a great location in the heart of the shopping district. We stayed here because it was the only hotel that would guarantee our check in at 11 a.m. which was important because we had a wedding to get to that day. It’s an older hotel but everything functioned properly and the rooms are quite large compared to other hotels I’ve stayed at for way more $$$. Oh ***bring your own shampoo and conditioner as they have none in the rooms or at reception****

We stayed here on the way from Perth to Margaret River, as we wanted to break up the driving with our baby. We now wish we either drove through or slept in the car.

We booked through the information office, and really wish we read other reviews before staying here. The reception/main building was dated and felt like something out of a horror movie. The bed was so bad that we didn't sleep hardly at all. Our daughter (who is 7 months old) can usually sleep through anything, and couldn't even get comfortable in her travel cot because of the loud a/c and the lights shining through the faux stained glass in the door and window (there's no blackout drapes).
For "breakfast", there's toast and instant coffee (none of the real stuff), plus a selection of eggs and meats ordered a la carte. Service was slow and the eggs were not cooked as ordered (poached eggs came as fried--with one egg soft and the other hard). Besides being centrally located, the only positive we can think of is that breakfast came with free sauces, which everywhere else in Australia you seem to have to pay for (which is frustrating for us North Americans), but no amount of free katchup could compensate for our stay at the Rose.

The Rose hotel is in the centre of Bunbury on Victoria Street, which is the main shopping area.
The style of the hotel was reminiscent of those in New Orleans, with wrought iron rails etc. The interior was serene and cool. We stayed in one of the motel rooms adjoining all of which had their own facilities, preferring that to sharing facilities in the main hotel building.
We also had a meal in the restaurant which was delicious, from an extensive menu. The staff were delightful and courteous.
The only downside was, as in most of the motels in Western Australia was that the bedrooms have no bedside lights which can be inconvenient.
The breakfast was served in the large dining room in the hotel building, white starched tablecloths and silver cruets and covered sugar bowls on the tables reminded us of those of quality hotels in England during the fifties and sixties. The breakfast was full English and included in the price of the room.
