Owner description: Located at the heart of the spectacular Great Ocean Road region, only one west of the popular Twelve Apostles and just ten minutes from the coastal tourism hub of Warrnambool, you will discover the naturally diverse offering of the exquisite Tower Hill Wildlife Reserve. Declared Victoria’s first National Park in 1892, Tower Hill is the ideal place for visitors to experience the Australian bush, enjoy magnificent scenery and landscapes while getting up close & personal with some of Australia’s most iconic native birds and animals including emus, koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, black swans, wedge-tail eagles, magpie geese and seasonal reptiles. The Reserve sits inside a dormant volcano and its plethora of wildlife provides visitors with the rare opportunity to witness animals at close range in their natural habitat. This, combined with guided tours to learn about wildlife, environmental conservation and sustainability and local history provide a truly unique eco-tourism experience. A site of ecological and geological significance and a showcase for indigenous history, Tower Hill Wildlife Reserve is open the public 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with guided tours available everyday on demand. Within its spectacular 11km crater rim, the volcanic cones rise from a lake bed in a formation known as a nested maar, which occurred as a result of the volcanic dome collapsing on itself due to weight. A close proximity to The Twelve Apostles, The Grampians and Port Campbell National Parks as well as a number of other factors, makes Tower Hill a must see for tourists seeking nature based & cultural interpretation experiences, or groups with an interest in environmental studies:• Landscape & Scenic values recognised by the local and wider community listed by the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and the Register of National Estate. • Geological values rated as nationally significant (nested maar).• Habitat values including remnants and wetlands. • Cultural and social values related to the major re-vegetation program involving thousands of volunteers (the first of its kind in Victoria).• Informal recreation, education, research and wildlife viewing opportunities for domestic & international visitors.• Aboriginal heritage values including several significant sites, as well as Post European contact heritage values.

We only stayed near the info area as we were entertained by the koalas on the trees. It's a good place to get fresh air and for a bbq. Great views if you climb to the top.

It was interesting to find out about Australias recent volcanic activity. The wild life was quite abundent and not a bit bothered by our presence.

Managed by the indigenous and with a very good interpretive centre, Tower hill offers simple to more complex walks.
Learn to throw a boomerang, feed the emus, have a close up and personal encounter with a Koala or a wallaby either way, it is one of the most understated national parks.
Take lunch or sample aboriginal food, either way, a very entertaining day out

This is a popular place with families wanting to take a walk with nature and to have a picnic. The Information Centre provides maps of several walking tracks suitable for those who seek an easy walk to those who are up for something more strenuous.

Amazing to learn that this was once a volcano that erupted about 32,000 years ago and created the cone shaped hills and little lakes. Farming and misuse once stripped the area of wildlife however in the 1950s revegetation projects began to restore the area and it was declared a State Game Reserve in 1961. The benefits of this were all around - lots of emus, some of which were determined to have or lunch - koalas in the car park as well as in the bush,
birds flitting elusively in the trees. We watched as a black crow had a meal of a rabbit.

We took an easy walk around Wagon Bay and saw many black geese on the lake as well as Kangaroos hiding in the undergrowth. The sign indicating the exit, back to the Information Centre had been turned around so check your direction if you do this walk.

Well worth taking the time to come off the main road and have a look. Great views from the top of the old volcano rim, teaming with bird life and interesting geology in the park.
