“Beautiful Chinese food”
Reviewed March 4, 2013

We had lunch here and it was beautiful. The portions are very generous and we could have easily shared a starter and main. The service was also excellent.

“Chinese in St Kilda”
Reviewed March 3, 2013

Having wanted to try Lau's for a couple of years, a friends birthday finally gave us the perfect excuse. We were warmly greeted at the door by a couple of staff members and immediately seated for our 8pm seating. The food, like the Flower Drum, is delicious. The service attentive and polite. But given the simple bistro style decor, the prices are extortion and at least double those of Mahjong, another Chinese eatery situated close by in Fitzroy Street. Only three desserts to choose from meant only one in our party of six ordered anything.. A good experience, but not one to be repeated anytime soon.

“Great food supported by exceptional, unobtrusive, instinctive service.”
Reviewed February 21, 2013 via mobile

Arrived at Lau's early Monday night for a quick dinner prior to a gig at the Palais, no booking. Shown to a window table for 2 with the explanation that we needed to vacate by 8, no problem. Ordered an entree and main each, wines by the glass. Asked by our waiter if we were sharing - yes... Meal then transpired as a banquet of four courses, each dish presented to us both equally. Service was effortless, amusing and engaging. New wines appeared by the glass almost sooner than we had ordered. walked out 90 min later sated, satisfied and full. Could not fault it, just perfect. Special mention of the duck with sour plum. Yeah baby!

“Great food”
Reviewed January 28, 2013 via mobile

The food here is very good and authentic.
Very small and loud dining area and can be a bit on the pricey side. I would go back for the food.

“Suffering the Flower Drum halo effect?”
Reviewed January 25, 2013

For years I saw Flower Drum, Gilbert Lau's original claim to fame, get multiple accolades that frankly I thought were overrated and I got the same feeling here. In marketing or business the cardinal sin is over promising and although here it is the customer reviews rather than LFK themselves that do that, it has the same effect - let down.

It is not bad but it's not brilliant either. Service was good without being stellar and the ambience is basic. They do the two sittings business for dinner 6-8.30 and 8.30 + which I guess is OK.

Salt and pepper squid was good, chilli prawns were good, brisket was OK but not the texture it could be, lamb spring rolls have an interesting flavour but not everybody's taste, hero of the evening was the ma po tofu closely followed by the pork belly. The strawberries had been given a good rap but they were well, just strawberries and plain vanilla ice cream
