A hop, skip and jump from the chaos of downtown Melbourne on the #16 tram landed me in downtown St.Kilda. A sunny day it was, a welcome escape it wasn’t.

A dirty, grimy, hipsters’ haven with little regard for the history of this beach town or the homelessness, but more for the tattoo parlors, the Adult X rated clubs, the graffiti laden brick and stucco facades of historic Victorian homes/buildings.

Clean it up St. Kilda!

St. Kilda Beach is an easy taxi or public transit trip from Melbourne. It is particularly popular for its penguin coloney that emerges after dusk.

I really liked the long bike lane. It's a plus that there's a stand of Melbourne bikes. There are cool bars and the old amusement park, but tickets are too pricey.

St Kilda is a convenient place to watch penguins and enjoy beach if you are short of time and can not make a day trip to Phillip island. You can reach by tram (not in free zone) and walk all the way to the end of the pier. check for sunset timing and reach just 30 minutes before. Take your place on right side (below the pier) . after sunset you can see penguins arriving and walking to hideouts in the rock. The penguins will arrive from the side where the sea is calmer.

its very windy and becomes cold, so carry appropriate protection.
