Ranked #1 of 3 St Kilda B&B and Inns

We stayed with Catherine and Bob over Christmas 2013 for a week. We wanted to try something a bit different from the large hotels and we found a real gem here thanks to trip advisor recommendations.
We stayed in the "red" room and were extremely comfortable. The room was not huge but absolutely fine. We loved the breakfasts which included lots of fruit and choice of cereals, toast, croissants, etc. accompanied by excellent coffee (roasted by Bob!). It was lovely and friendly with lots of chat about things to do with Catherine and the really pleasant Swiss couple who were working at the B&B.
It was ideally placed for the beach and all the shops and restaurants of St Kilda as well as numerous tram stops close by.
We explored lots of Melbourne and with the very helpful advice from Catherine we managed to visit all the main sites. Catherine provided us with top up cards for the trams and she really went the extra mile by providing all the picnic equipment we needed for a special Christmas dinner!
I would thoroughly recommend Mary Street if you want a comfortable, friendly and very special place to use as a base in Melbourne. We loved it!

We stayed here for three nights to visit Melbourne. A nice quiet B&B in a neighborhood that is also interesting in the evening is hard to find anyway. This one was not only very cozy and comfortable, but also very nicely decorated with local and international art. The room was spacious and the bed very comfortable. As you can see in their pictures, the building is very nice as well. There is also a vast collection of music and DVDs available.
Breakfast was cold but delicious, with lots of fresh fruit and excellent coffee. Catherine was a very friendly and helpful host and their helpers at the time - Florian and Rachel - did an outstanding job in making our stay as easy and comfortable as possible. Thanks again to Rachel for pointing out the penguins to us as well as to Catherine for the excellent recommendations of local restaurants.
The B&B is also very conveniently located for public transport. Various tram lines stop within five minutes from the house and total traveling time by bus and tram to the airport is about an hour. Hardly worth to grab a taxi or shuttle from the airport. Travelling time to the city is about 20-30 minutes. It may seem expensive - but then again Melbourne is not cheap in general - but is very well worth every penny. If we ever make it to Melbourne again, staying here again is pretty much a no-brainer.

28 Mary Street is a well-run, comfortable, and gracious B&B. Catherine is an excellent host, always available to answer questions and give advice (especially about local restaurants). Plus, the building is filled with interesting local art and photography. Breakfasts were healthy and plentiful, and it was refreshing to return after a busy day to a quiet neighborhood with an endless number of restaurants. We felt St. Kilda might be too far away from things we wanted to do, and while the tram takes about a half-hour to get to most things, several main lines stop very near the B&B and run frequently. And, St. Kilda has its own attractions; don't forget Luna Park!

We were having problems deciding where to stay in Melbourne before we came across Mary St on TA and were we glad we picked it. We had an absolutely lovely stay made even more special by Catherine .She had thought of everything from places to eat , see, walks ,tram passes etc. It goes without saying that everything was impeccable. The big plus was that the trams were only 5 minutes walk and it was 10 minutes to the sea front but Mary St is quite quiet. St Kilda is being restored to its old charm and is a charming places to wander around.
Unlike a previous reviewer we did not find the bed too firm and that is a no no for us . ( see some of our European reviews), and of course we cannot forget the great breakfasts.
The recommended Greek Restaurant was amazing, ate there both nights

We had a lovely stay at Mary Street, Catherine and Bob were kind enough to cater for our dietary requirements as vegans with a lovely fruit and coconut yoghurt breakfast and gave us some great recommendations for dinner. The room was clean and comfortable apart from the bed being too firm, but some people like a very firm bed. It is in a great quiet location with a quick walk to restaurants and the local cinema.

On our travels through Australia we stumbled upon this amazing B&B located in St Kilda. The service was amazing, the rooms were very well decorated and comfortable. Bob and Catherine were very kind and very hospitable. I highly recommend this place for any pair/couple looking for a very nice and quiet area that's just outside Melbourne. Other notes: St. Kilda is a nice area worth checking out and isn't too far away from the city. A cab ride from the airport to Mary St will cost about 65-70 dollars. Overall, we loved this B&B.

Wanting to stay in St Kilda, and having previously been disappointed by all but the view at the local 4 star “plastic” hotel, the Tripadvisor community led me to 28 Mary Street, which proved a great alternative. Quiet and comfortable it was worth swapping the view of the ocean for that of the leafy roof-tops of the residential streets. It is perfectly located, with a plethora of excellent restaurants within a 5 to 10 minute walk.
Bob and Catherine look after their guests very well, being helpful but not obtrusive and serving a perfect continental breakfast. And their art collection adorning the walls of every room is a great bonus.
