“Not the best place to start in Aus”
Reviewed June 28, 2014

This is the hostel we booked through STA travel. We decided to make Melbourne our first stop and where we would set everything up. When the staff were there, they were helpful and had everything set up for us in 2 days (bank accounts, medicare etc...) Do not rely on them to help you find work. They do not help you at all. The manager at the time just kept on saying she knew everyone in Melbourne and would be able to get us a job through one of her friends, which of course never happened.

The hostel it self is the worst we have ever come across. It is run down. Noisy. Dirty (even though they seem to have about 20 so called cleaners. aka, travellers who are "cleaning" to get free rent) and the staff just seem to treat it as one massive party house. It is on one of the worst streets in Melbourne where you will regularly see hookers and homeless people. I would really recommend staying in ANY other hostel. And really do not start your adventure here.

Hi Alex

Thanks for taking the time to leave a review and the nice words about the Coffee Palace Crew. We spend a lot of time on making sure that our guests are pleased with our service. We have an extensive network of employment contacts and try to find people work where possible. It's unfortunate that we couldn't help you in this case, I hope that next time we can point you in the right direction. We are completely overhauling the hostel at the moment so all the run down areas are getting some love and we are replacing all the furniture and fixtures. All the beds now have brand new mattresses. Yeiw!

Grey St is in the heart of St Kilda so we occasionally have some less than desirable characters wander past our door. Rest assured that we have a 24 hour manned reception desk and a brand new proximity lock security system that keeps all our guests safe.

We'd love to have you back next time you're in Melbourne to show you all the improvements that we've made. Give the front desk a call and ask for Jordan for a sweet Trip Advisor deal!

Many Thanks

The Coffee Crew.

What a vile place! From the moment we checked in we wanted to check out again, but we couldn't without losing our money. They wouldn't give us a refund even though it stated on the website they had a 24hr cancellation policy. That was problem no.1 when we got to our room it hadn't been cleaned in months, there was pubic hair in the sink, on the bed and in the fridge. There was also mystery stains in the fridge that we never quite worked out what they were. The 'clean' bed sheets had hair on which definitely weren't ours, then we pulled back the sheets to find the rankest most stained mattress I have ever seen. The room was disgusting, house keeping consisted of random people walking in your room every morning without knocking just to take the empty bin bags away. The shower was that grimy, you didn't want to step on the floor with no shoes on as it looked like you might catch something! You were unable to prepare your own food as the kitchen was such a state.. This is the worst hostel I have ever stayed in and won't ever go back, don't do it to yourself! You can get much nicer, cleaner places for the same money in better locations.. I forgot to mention outside the hostel is where the local crackheads hang out so you get asked if you can score when you leave for dinner. All in all, a nightmare!!

Wasn't that bad a stay but I think there were better/ cheaper accommodation in the area. It did the job as we had to book a place to stay on the day. Was about a 15 minute tram ride from Melbourne but affordable and convenient enough for this to not be a problem even if you intend to go in to Melbourne every day.

This was mine and my boyfriends first stop along a 3 month journey around Australia and it is fair to say this is by far the worst hostel we had to endure! Never again.
From the rude, arrogant staff who ignored us continuously throughout our stay to the dirty rooms and the awful facilities this is a place I would advise all to stay clear of!
Everyone in the hostel (mainly staff) were unfriendly and made us feel very uncomfortable and unwelcomed. We asked questions politely hoping to get answers and advise about the best things to do around the area and we were always greeted with impolite responses and dismissive faces.
DONT STAY HERE!!!!!
Coffee palace is the worst.

Booked a double room here with my partner, don't let the pictures on here fool you I think they have one nice room just for pictures. We came into our room to find a broken bed with no sheet and pillows older than us. We ended up sleeping with the mattress on the floor. I felt cleaner before I got into the shower and the fact there was shared toilet right next to the shower sharing the same floor with no shower door was off putting in itself. We found somewhere else to stay and requested a refund for two of the remaining three days of our intended stay but we're refused and offered vouchers for the same franchise elsewhere however after staying at this
one we are very reluctant to ever stay anywhere associated with it. Nice Kitchen though.

Very social hostel. Loved the roof and common area. I made great friends here and it's really easy to meet new people. Very helpful and friendly staff. Also perfect location in st kilda. Close to tram station and beach. I definitelly recommend staying here.
