A 3 day stop over in Melbourne was spent at the Cosmopolitan in Melbour St Kilda. On arrival I thought uh-oh bad choice but, its nicer on the inside than out!

Checki n was quick and easy in a large recpetion area. Our cosmo delux rooms was in the same block of the hotel (B block) and consisted of a large(ish) room with walk in shower. A nice desk ran the length of one wall and a wall mounted LCD tv provided entertainment. The room was clean and tidy and had everyhting we needed. A nice touch was all the guides to the local area.

Other facilities included a restaunrant, internet pc, and a small laundry.

Location was central to St Kilda beach and the hotel is close to a tram stop, and indeed trams pass right outside (between 6am and midnight) and cause some noise. journey from Melbourne central was about 30-35mintues.

I stayed at this hotel on NYE. The rooms are tiny and cramped, but that was ok. But, when I left the next day, I found that I had more than 60 BED BUG bites, mostly on my shoulders and back. I didn't know what they were but I was pretty freaked out! I work at a hospital, so when I went back to work the nurses were so horrified at how bad the bites looked (I also had massive bites on my face and neck which were very visible - and extremely embarrassing) that one of them rang the hotel to inform them that I definitely had bed bug bites. Apparently the hotel needed me to ring them, which I did - the manager basically told me that they didn't find any bed bugs and pretty much dismissed me as a liar - what great service! I was so worried about the bites that I went to see my doctor, who confirmed that they were, in actual fact, bed bug bites (if you're not sure check out the website:http://medent.usyd.edu.au/bedbug/). Don't stay at this hotel -they obviously don't care about their customers and their service is not what you would expect from a 4.5 star hotel.

The Cosmopolitan Hotel will always take complaints of this nature very seriously and is disappointed that you feel the action taken by the hotel was not sufficient. After receiving a phone call from your colleague, three days after your stay, the hotel immediately contacted our pest control company to thoroughly check the room you occupied for visible signs of bed bugs. This was completed on the same day the phone call was received.

The investigation concluded that there was no evidence of bed bugs within the room. This information was relayed back to your colleague who was satisfied with this outcome. The following day your colleague again contacted the hotel stating you still believed that you had been bitten by bed bugs. During this discussion it was determined that the bites did not present themselves for almost 24+ hours after your stay. It is commonly held fact that bites from bed bugs will be noticeable immediately.

Given that the bites were not noticeable immediately and that subsequent guests occupying the same room did not claim to have been bitten the hotel believes it acted in the most friendly and efficient manner. It is unfortunate an event which is unsubstantiated has tainted your opinion of the hotel. It is important to also note that the Cosmopolitan Hotel has a variety of different room types ranging from the Cosmo Petite Room, which you occupied, through to large and spacious Grand 2 Bedroom Apartments. The price paid for each room type is in line with its respective size.

Decent enough apartment hotel in centre of St Kilda, close to that suburb's trendy bars and restaurants but some way out of the centre of Melbourne. Rather tedious tram ride into town.
I booked a studio apartment which covered all the basics but that was about it. It was beginning to show its age.
The staff, though, were very helpful and always ready to assist.
I got a studio at the rear of the building. Given the noise and activity of Acland St I certainly wouldn't have wanted to be on the front.
Melbourne, though, was great.

Tricky review to write as the hotel has a lot going for it; modern building, excellent central location, and nice boutique style rooms.

However do not stay here unless you are planning to party hard for the duration of your stay. We arrived at the hotel on the evening of Christmas day, off of a 24 hour flight, and whilst the room was very welcoming, we may as well have tried to sleep on the floor of the party in the building opposite. However, this was Christmas day, and the party died out by about 2am so was no real problem. The bigger issue came two days later when another flat in the same block opposite (as in, the other side of a side road) had a party that lasted from 5pm to 5am at a volume that was, in some respects, pretty immpressive, if it hadnt made us want to sleep in the car quite as much.

To clarify, we knew it was a party area and that was part of the appeal, but i have had more peaceful stays at Glastonbury festival.

Its a mistake to criticise a hotel because of the behaviour of its neighbours, but there comes a point where you feel that the management should have a relationship with their contempories across the road in the holiday flats. We did try to move room, and understand that the hotel was full so couldnt be done, and the staff did offer to phone the police, but really, come morning we were pleased to be gone.

Also, the maid service was poor. One day we were completely missed, and the others they just made the bed (badly) and didnt do anything else leaving us with empty shampoo bottles, towells everywhere etc.

In conclusion, a good hotel internally, and a good price, but dont expect much sleep, and get ready to tidy your own room.

The Cosmo is a great hotel in a great location. We stayed in a room with a small kitchenette and it was very spacious with a little dining area. The decor is hip but not too dated. Not far from great restaurants and bars, but the downstairs restaurant La Kitchen is good too. It's a well designed, clean, well located hotel and i'd definately stay there again.

They get the basics right - friendly and very helpful staff, lovely spacious room and large comfy bed. In addition, breakfasts were stunning, bathroom was modern and very clean and the hotel itself was funky and inviting.

St Kilda is a great place to stay and its so easy to get to the city and other areas on the trams.

For food in St Kilda, check out Las Chicas for breakfast (203 Carlisle Street, next to Balaclava Train Station) and Cicciolinas for coffee, lunch, dinner and drinks at 130 Acland St (no bookings).
