We stayed on a Thursday night and Sunday night. Both rooms were excellent and clean. The beds were very comfortable and we were happy with the extra pillows as you don't always have them available. Don't usually like stepping into a bath for a shower but that's not a big deal. What impressed us the most was the level of service, the staff were so welcoming and friendly. Our bags had been dropped of earlier in the day and these were in our room waiting for us. Would/will stay there again!
The rooms are becoming more & more like the Accor European style... Exceptionally small. Not much space to walk around the bed.
Only room for one suitcase, limited hanging space, one chair, which is fine for the single traveller.
We went to meet family in the bar, located on the lower ground level at Grill3128, as we walked out of the lift the odour was reminiscent of public toilets, most unpleasant.
Not sure if it was the aging carpets or in fact the cleaning agents being used?
Seriously needs to be addressed though, odour is overwhelming as you walk through to the bar / restaurant area.
Thank you for your comments with regards to you stay here at the Novotel St Kilda.
We have used your comments to ensure we continue to improve our offering to our guests. On this occassion, we are in the process of reviewing our scent that is sprayed on the lower level near Grill 3182, our restaurant and have contacted the company who supplies this scent in order to provide a more pleasant, softer odour in this area.
Thank you once again for you comments and we look forward to welcoming you back to St Kilda in the near future.
I read the reviews before booking this hotel so can only conclude we were unlucky to have been given the worst possible room. I stayed with my 12 year old daughter in a twin room. We had a long drive from the country and an early flight in the morning. We arrived quite late and were simply looking forward to a good nights sleep in a comfortable bed. We both wrinkled our noses in disgust when we walked into the room, it was so old and tired. Stained ceilings, marked walls and filthy grout in the tiny bathroom and stained cushions on the beds. When I felt my pillow, it was like a pancake so I was relieved when I found two extras in the cupboard, only to find they were both dirty! We were awoken countless times during the night by noisy plumbing and then in the morning while taking a shower, the hot water tap fell off the wall and landed on my foot...ouch!! Mentioned our issues to the staff in the morning only to be told that we had booked a standard room and that it what we got - sub standard in my opinion!
Thank you for your comments with regards to your stay with us here at the Novotel St Kilda. Our goal is to please all our guests regardless of room or how long they stay with us. It seems on this occassion we fell short of our objective so please accept my sincere apologies.

The bed was especially comfortable - it has one of those 'pillowtop' layers, the curtains are able to totally blackout the outside light, the room was very clean and quiet and the layout of the furniture was good. The room also had a handy in-room safe. Nice bathroom with tub. Room service was prompt - I had a tasty club sandwich. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The room temperature control pad was rather tricky and unintuitive, 'tho.
Very minor thing was that the room cleaning staff kept leaving the 2 drinking glasses right underneath the sink's only electricity power outlet. This meant that when I tried to use the hair dryer or the kettle, I ran the risk of knocking over the glasses (and possibly breaking them into the sink) so everyday I had to keep moving the glasses to the far left corner, away from the power outlet. Again, minor detail - just a bit of a possible safety risk if guests aren't careful.
Food (lunch and breaks) during the conference was excellent! Great variety of vegetables, salads and selection of various dishes. I also noticed that this is one of the few hotels that's trying to cater to the growing Chinese market by providing rice porridge and savoury accompaniments. Although the pickles were the Japanese ginger pickles that one gets with sushi, instead of the Chinese-style pickles, the other sprinkles (i.e. shallots, dried fish flakes and fish sauce) were good and the consistency of the porridge was good too.
Note: be careful in entering the lifts if many people are exiting. The doors close quickly and you won't be able to stop the door by sticking your hand in between. After 6 people exited, I tried to stop the doors but the doors just shut anyway and the elevator went back up.
We stayed for one night and loved it. Friendly helpful staff made check in & check out a breeze. The onsite parking available at a reasonable price. We stayed in one of the larger bay view rooms. Spacious, with the decor fresh and modern, with everything you need to make your stay a comfortable one. The location is fabulous, restaurants close by and the trams a stones throw away. We had breakfast included, it was the standard hotel fair. The only thing I didn't like was the bath, with it strange expanded sides, I am small and I struggled to get comfortable in it, they had the room to put a proper size bath in it (wondering if this is a type of water saving bath) but that is a minor quibble that didn't detract too much from an otherwise very good experience.
