Having to come up to Mildura occasionally to run a firefighting course, I've eaten at a few different restaurants in my time. One of the best is Springfields.
Entrees are, well, a great start to the meal. I had the Springfields Cheesy Turkish Bread. It was as an entree should be. Light, bursting with flavour, and left me hungry for more. A perfect way to lead into the main course.
Main course exceeded expectations again. I chose a Parma, standard fare for me. Springfields Three Cheese Chicken Parmigiana, to be exact. The chicken was cooked as I like it, soft and easy to eat, but with the texture evident still. The crumb was crunchy but not excessively so.
The Napoli brought a lovely rich flavour to the meal. Combined with the freshly grated Parmesan cheese (3 different types too!) it made for a lovely main course.
Oh, mustn't forget the chips. Lovely beer battered rough cut chips, crunchy and full of flavour. As a side to the main meal, they enhanced it (if that's possible!).
For dessert, I chose something I don't often try. Sticky date pudding. To me, sticky date pudding is normally a bit of date pudding and some ice cream. Not particularly tasty. Being a guy, I didn't read what I was ordering, so didn't know to expect what came out on the plate.
A decent serving of date pudding. That was ok in it's own right, but the rest of the dish made it for me! A scoop of vanilla ice cream helped to smooth the pudding out. The butterscotch sauce brought a lovely sweet flavour to balance the subtle flavours of the date pudding.
The real kicker of the dish, and what I really didn't expect to see, was the toffee. A lovely rich toffee decoration, carefully hardened and placed over the dish, giving some crunch to balance the softness of the pudding and ice cream. It looked awesome!
That's the food, but great food can be spoilt by a poor atmosphere. Springfields certainly don't spoil their food! The music is soft, slow and relaxing. It's a small restaurant, and that adds to its charm. The service is more personal, and the waitress, Lauren, makes each and every diner feel like they are important, and takes the time to talk to everyone and get to know them.
Overall, food was terrific, and service was great. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone after a lovely meal in Mildura.
