Because we were disappointed the water taxi was not running on a recent day that we were at Lakes Entrance and we wanted to go to the Barrier Landing to visit a family property near there, Peels skipper James Peel happily volunteered to take us out after his scheduled winery cruise. He was as interested in the visit to the Barrier as we were. We would like to thank him very much for taking us on an unscheduled trip on Stormbird. Earlier in the day we had done a lakes cruise on Thunderbird, which we thoroughly enjoyed and recommend as a good sightseeing trip.

We went on the lunch cruise to Metung. It was a lovely sunny day and our captain was very friendly but I felt the trip to be lacking somewhat. There was very long periods when we were just motoring along, I had hoped for a lot more commentary. Two hours in Metung is also a very long time, there is not even a gift shop or something to browse around in. The lunch was very nice but very limited choices. I expected a bit better for $50 a head. The weather and the few seals we saw were the best part.

We were visiting from Canada and had no idea about this beautiful area of Victoria state. The Lakes of Gippland were a pleasant surpise. The best way to appreciate the size and diversity of the lakes district is to take a half day cruise on the Peels ship the Thunderbird. The boat was comforable and had plenty of space both inside (if it rains) or outside. The commentary from the skipper was very informative and the sights up in the Paynesville area were quite unexpected. We were suprised to see how many expensive homes were located in this area. The whole trip was relaxing and well worth the price of a ticket.

Peels is the oldest provider of ferry services at Lakes Entrance. We did the 70 km loop covering the major lakes and it was quite a journey. The Captain gave bits and pieces of information on all the islands we crossed, there was food, coffee and liquids on sale, the icecream was a sell-out as it was a pretty hot day and I got a free tan!! Its a good way to get an idea of all the lakes although there is no stopping anywhere. The whole loop took around 2 and half hours to complete.

The trip with the thunderbird was relaxing from 2 pm - 4.30 pm ,we picked up some people from Metung and went through the Kinglake and Victoria lake towards Paynesville.
Nice to sit outside and inside where we had a coffee and icecream, plenty of space.
A shame we did not see dolphins ,but there were many black swans and birds.
it was a pleasant trip, the weather was perfect! The boat is very stable ,its a catamaran boat.
