Attraction details
Owner description: The Port of Echuca is a living monument to the 1870's when it was Australia's largest inland port and indeed the third largest port in Australia outside Sydney and Melbourne. Authentic steam driven paddlesteamers depart daily from the Echuca Wharf which originally extended 333 metres in length in the 1880's and has been recently been reconstructed.Home of the TV series "All the Rivers Run", the Port of Echuca will provide you with a glimpse of what live was really like in the late 1800's. With the new Discovery Centre now open, it is indeed an attraction not to be missed.

Very nice and once the renovations are complete I am sure it will sparkle again. The restaurants and shops are excellent. Really good choice of food. Lots of nice walks around the Port and in town. Worth a day or two to see this lovely town and it certainly takes you back to the All the rivers run series.

You now have to pay to walk along the boardwalk at the wharf - very disappointing! You can have a free view through the cruise booking office, but it's a tiny area.

Dear Sandra & Peter,
Thank you for your review. As you would have seen the Port of Echuca is currently undergoing a $14.2 million Revitalisation Project. This project started three years ago, with the new Discovery Centre opening on 14 December 2013. The Centre will include interactive interpretation of our history in a way we have never done before, and will focus on five key themes, the place, people, environment, vessels and legacy. The project also included the creation of two new walkways enabling (for the first time) universal access under the Wharf and throughout the whole site. The plans also include three new river viewing areas for visitors from Murray Esplanade.
We hope you are able to revisit our region once the works are complete.

We enjoyed wandering about the Port of Echuca and taking a ride on the Peversley paddlesteamer when holidaying in Echuca recently. Loved the experience of sitting on the wool bales as it went down the river listening to the commentary about the history of the port and the paddlesteamers that plied the river in earlier days. And the best part was that it was dog friendly and we were allowed to take a dog along with us. This was a bonus and very appreciated. Echuca have done an excellent job of restoring the port area and presenting an excellent tourist attraction. Well done.

The Port of Echuca USED to be a great place to visit but now, not so. It will be interesting once the work being undertaken is finished but there is nothing like the 'old time' stuff to keep kids interested. I believe the interperative centre may make some difference but wouldn't it be nice for the younger visitors to see 'hands on' how things used to happen, instead of pushing a button to see it on a T.V. screen as I believe will happen in the new centre. Echuca is a great place to visit but in our opinion, the Port is not a pinch on what it was. Apart from a stroll along the river and watching the paddle steamers there just doesn't seem much to grab one's interest. A walk along the main street looking at the shops was more involving and of greater interest.

What a great attraction! Great for all members of the family... with a 'chirpy' dialogue which explained much of the local history.
