With a pretty good location, Echuca Backpackers is your standard accommodation of the variety favoured by those travelling on a budget. Although it's on the main road leading into town, it was surprisingly quiet when I stayed; it was the middle of winter, however. An instant plus is the old building, giving a sense of the history of Echuca as soon as you arrive.

With several common areas, it's a cosy and welcoming place, with helpful and knowledgeable staff. The only downside in this regard was that the owner, who doubled as the receptionist, was actually in town somewhere when I arrived, which meant I had to wait 10 minutes or so until he returned. A minor inconvenience, but still...

I stayed in a room with four bunks, which was comfortable enough and, with free bedding included in the price, it was good value for money for around $25. Having the room to myself was an added bonus too. There were a few items that had been left by previous occupants, but the small dorm was clean and reasonably well looked after.

Echuca itself is a nice little town right on the Murray and Campaspe Rivers, with several options for meals and a few beers. It's only about a 10 minute walk to the rivers and the houseboats contained therein, if that's your thing. Moama is also only about 30 minutes away on foot, which means that you can cross over into New South Wales, with views over the Murray itself when you cross the bridge dividing the two towns.

All in all, Echuca Backpackers is a decent place to stay and, at the price, you really can't beat it, especially if your lucky enough to get a room to yourself, although I can imagine in the summer months it would full to bursting at times. I'd definitely recommend it over some other hostels I've stayed in for those on a budget and who enjoy the backpacker lifestyle, odd, yet interesting conversations included.

After a very rough start to our backpacking adventure me and my fiance found ourselves with nowhere to go, sitting at a train station in Swan Hill...with little money and all of our worldly belongings in various bags.....

After phoning around a few of the hostels I had stored in my mobile for such an emergency as this we come across a number for Echuca Backpackers....who I had spoken to previously and who had seemed very friendly.

My fiance called them up again and she spoke to the guy there who said there "may" be some work coming up next week....we threw caution to the wind and decided we wanted to go there.....we left with no confirmation from the Hostel and jumped on a train through to Echuca...when we got there we spoke to the hostel owner and she said she would come pick us up from the train station....

She was nice and above all she was a friendly face...just what we needed after our ordeal....they put us both into a room together, and told us that we may have to move in a few days because the people who's room it was were away.....we didn't mind....finally after everything we had been through....Echuca Backpackers felt like coming home.

Over the coming month they helped us to find work, and even let us help out around the hostel when there was little work coming in to help pay our way....it was hard work but the most satisfying work we had done since leaving Sydney. As we felt like we were helping friends.

The hostel itself is a lovely building with a great past which can be still seen in some of the rooms (the blackboard in the tv room or the gas taps in the kitchen)...the staff are fantastic and very helpful (even if like us you are a bit of a handful sometimes)

I would recommend this hostel to anybody going to Echuca...it is a fantastic little place and you will feel very welcome. A true home away from home.
