With a pretty good location, Echuca Backpackers is your standard accommodation of the variety favoured by those travelling on a budget. Although it's on the main road leading into town, it was surprisingly quiet when I stayed; it was the middle of winter, however. An instant plus is the old building, giving a sense of the history of Echuca as soon as you arrive.
With several common areas, it's a cosy and welcoming place, with helpful and knowledgeable staff. The only downside in this regard was that the owner, who doubled as the receptionist, was actually in town somewhere when I arrived, which meant I had to wait 10 minutes or so until he returned. A minor inconvenience, but still...
I stayed in a room with four bunks, which was comfortable enough and, with free bedding included in the price, it was good value for money for around $25. Having the room to myself was an added bonus too. There were a few items that had been left by previous occupants, but the small dorm was clean and reasonably well looked after.
Echuca itself is a nice little town right on the Murray and Campaspe Rivers, with several options for meals and a few beers. It's only about a 10 minute walk to the rivers and the houseboats contained therein, if that's your thing. Moama is also only about 30 minutes away on foot, which means that you can cross over into New South Wales, with views over the Murray itself when you cross the bridge dividing the two towns.
All in all, Echuca Backpackers is a decent place to stay and, at the price, you really can't beat it, especially if your lucky enough to get a room to yourself, although I can imagine in the summer months it would full to bursting at times. I'd definitely recommend it over some other hostels I've stayed in for those on a budget and who enjoy the backpacker lifestyle, odd, yet interesting conversations included.
