I thought I knew a bit about the Australian gold rush and something about mining but this trip down a goldmine highlighted many things I didn't know.
Informative,funny and very interesting.
Great activity if your 8 or 80!

Going to the mine was recommended to us as we travelled through the general area. We were not disappointed by our decision to stop. We arrived and didn't really know what we wanted to do as there were several options, the mine experience can be coupled with a tram journey through bendigo and to several sites therein.
We were hesitant as we were thinking about arriving in another destination for dinner, any way the assistant, Fiona, was straight on the Internet for us trying to work out our time available. Service like this is rare and we were incredibly pleased with her helping us like that.
It was decided that we would do the mine experience tour and tram talking tour.
First the mine tour, we went with tour guide darryl, what a lovely chap. He was very knowledgable, taking his time to explain things as he went. You could tell he cared and was passionate about the mine and the process that miners went through.
You will not be disappointed if you spend some hours here.
The tram journey was nice, taking you on genuine trams from yesteryear times in bendigo. It is a great way to see the town.
If we had more time we would of visited the tram museum, it looked good too.

We took a guided tour underground and it exceeded expectations. Our guide, Lynne, was knowledgable and amicable and provided a warm and informative tour. We got to wear hard hats with lamps and go down in an elevator (far flasher than the miners would ever use) to explore mine workings. I wasn't looking forward to it particularly as I thought I might feel somewhat claustrophobic and maybe be bored. Wrong on both counts. The tour was fascinating and covered the geology of gold deposits as well as the extraction methods and social history. We had a 7 year old with us and she was kept fully engaged throughout. I'd been to Sovereign Hill several years before and had expected the same faux history approach. In terms of learning and experience, I far preferred this tour. Recommended.

We went on a guided tour of the mine as part of our "Bendigo Experience" ticket and it was great. Ages of kids 15,13 and 6 and the 2 adults all really enjoyed it. Well paced tour, informative and we got to wear the real mining hat and light. Then we could look through the Museum. We stayed in Bendigo at the Julie-Anna Motel and it was only 50 metres from a Talking Tram stop so we could get to the Mine easily and with a great talking tour. We went in Dec/Jan school holidays and the tram runs more trips in these times. All staff at the Mine were very helpful. Thoroughly recommended.
