“Authentic, intimate restaurant”
Reviewed February 18, 2014

For an authentic Japanese experience I would highly recommend Kambei Japanese restaurant. As basically the best out of all the Japanese restaurants located in Ballarat, Victoria I would certainly be back. As you walk in, the atmosphere is wonderful, very intimate and enchanting. With a few tables available I would highly recommend booking in advance so you won't miss out on this great experience. Everything tends to be made fresh, by actual Japanese chefs so you won't have to question the authenticity of the place. They offered us set menus with the option to add in some items from another menu, for extra of course. It's been a while since I've been here but hope to come back soon. Though I would not recommend for young families as its very mature although however, they do offer a children's menu for those who are a little 'older'. Thank you Kambei for a wonderful experience!

“An Amazing Gem!”
Reviewed January 19, 2014

Kambei is situated at the foot of Sovereign Hill on the big round about just before you turn to go in. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but it is possibly the most authentic Japanese food I've had since Kyoto.

We went on a Saturday night so they had set banquets to choose from. Moderately priced for the food you get, you won't leave still feeling hungry.

The range of vegetables and way they served the sashimi set the scene for the main dishes which were expertly presented.

They knew what they were doing with the drinks too, as our Plum Wine came in a normal glass with large ice cubes. The waiter just so happened to be a Japanese beer connoisseur and I was finally able to share my grief with someone about the fact that we don't get real Asahi here in Australia.

Everything was amazing and as you would expect from a top notch restaurant in Japan except for one tiny thing. The utensils from which you eat. The chopsticks. Come on, Kambei! Next time I come, you'd better have real chopsticks and not the cheap wooden disposable ones. High quality restaurants of any other cuisine would never supply their diner with plastic or wooden cutlery. Don't be cheeky.

We will definitely be back.

“Delicious and perfectly prepared”
Reviewed December 31, 2013

We were a bit concerned when we were asked to book in somewhat earlier than we wanted to eat, but any concerns disappeared when the food appeared.

We ordered the set menu and every mouthful was delicious. The sashimi melted in your mouth, and everything was beautifully presented.

“Best Japanese restaurant with Japanese cooks in Australia”
Reviewed December 8, 2013

Fridays and Saturdays had a 4 course set menu costing about $39 and consisted of Japanese green tea, miso soup, yummy fried scallops, sushi, rice and a variety of fish, sliced and cooked to perfection by Japanese chefs. By far, this is the best and most authentic Japanese food I have ever tasted in Australia. It is worth the 2 hour drive from Melbourne simply for the food.

“Suprise inside”
Reviewed November 27, 2013

Really enjoyed this gem, outside looks like a country chinese restaurant. But inside is an impressive Japanese fitout. Generous space between tables and great ambience.
The service was spot on,we went on a Saturday night, so had the set menu. It made us try things we wouldn't normally order but we still enjoyed, and got us out of our comfort zone.
The sasumi was fantastic. Compared to city Japanese restaurants it was inexpensive.
Glad l read the reviews as l would never have found it otherwise, or booked it from looking at the outside.
