“The Ansonia made our wedding great”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 25, 2010

We had our wedding at the Ansonia in December. It was a brilliant night in no small part due to the effort put in by Ansonia staff to ensure the night ran smoothly. We had great feedback from our guests, particularly on the service, food and accommodation.

We feel very fortunate to have had such a great team to work with to make our wedding a night to remember. They really went the extra mile to make the night a success. It was an absolute pleasure and a breeze working with them from start to finish.

Special thanks to Brett and Jill who were really amazing and of course to Marlene and Mark. It was a pleasure and we absolutely recommend staying and eating at the Ansonia if you are in Ballarat.

Cheap 'hotel' rock hard beds, domestic fridge in bedroom made so much noise we had to turn it off at night, air conditioning in the bedroom didn't work, sockets too far away from tables for laptop, no internet connection in bedroom, radiators need bleeding.

The Ansonia owners need to rethink their approach. Boutique does not mean quirky decor and light fittings. If you can't get the basics right then don't bother. Having had a 'boutique' hotel myself I know that the basics must be right in order to develop repeat business, without it you survive on the single trip tourist.

Overpriced, underwehelming, in dire need of a revamp, very noisy at front of property.
Rooms dirty, glassware unwashed. Couldn't wait to leave.

Firstly I'd like to apologise for a bad experience. Since taking over the Hotel less than 9 months ago we have worked hard to raise the level of cleanliness & standard of service that was lacking when we arrived and it is dissapointing to hear that one slipped through the cracks. The person responsible for the cleaning that weekend has since been dismissed. Despite an old, & a little tired, building she is loved & enjoyed by us & our guests, many of whom return again & again. We appreciate the opportunity to take another look at ourselves and ensure that things are in place to prevent it from happening again.

My wife and I spent one night at The Ansonia in April 08 during our honeymoon. It was the last night of a 'boutique hotel' tour of the Great Ocean Road & South Victoria. As the first 3 night's accommodation had been wonderful in Apollo Bay, Port Fairy and Hall's Gap we were expecting the same in Ballarat... What a disappointment! The staff were unhelpful and very unfriendly (to the point of being rude in the case of the lady on reception at checkout). Breakfast was supposed to be included in the price we paid but all that was available was cornflakes and toast - for which they tried to recharge us $20 per person at checkout! The room itself was very basic - certainly not the 4* boutique quality advertised. I would say a very basic 2* quality at best. In room facilities were very basic. No minibar - just a fridge on the floor next to th tv. Bathroom was clean but just a small bottle of shampoo and a bar of soap - no shower cap, shaving set, vanity set, etc. as would be expected for price/star rating.
Ballarat was great and there seemed to be plenty of accommodation available - so I would advise to avoid this hotel abd choose another.

This was one of the rare instances during my frequent travels in which I first booked the hotel and only then saw the TripAdvisor reports. After reading the remarks on this hotel, I was sure my family was going to kill me! I was very pleasantly surprised. This is not a luxury hotel but it does not have the pretensions, or the price tag, of being one. The connecting rooms my family were given were large, clean and pleasant. I did not hear any of the street sounds described by other members. The bathroom was very large. The staff was very friendly and the lobby very pleasant. There is a gourmet restaurant on the premises that looked excellent although we opted to eat somewhere else.
At the Ansonia, and indeed all of Ballarat, there is an atmosphere of faded elegance but we felt that just added to its charm. The majority of tourists come to Ballarat just to see Sovereign Hill. But there is also a wonderful open range wilderness park filled with scores of kangeroos that can be endlessly fed, petted and photograped. It was one of the highlights of the entire trip to Australia for my children and we did not find any place as good in either Melbourne or Sydney. We were also very pleasantly surprised to find two exceptional restaurants in Ballarat. One was the Biboo cafe, around the corner from the Ansonia. It's a small place with a host of regular customers (they don't even have a business card) and amazingly wonderful food. (My son is still talking about the breakfast he ate there). Another place is the Phoenix, an informal wine bar with a gourmet menu that was exceptional.

Generally diasppointed with this hotel. The first "atrium" room we were given opened directly onto the restaurant courtyard, facing the entrance to the restaurant on a Sat night. Hardly private. Asked to be moved, the next room we couldn't open the blind as faced onto the general atrium, so no privacy and very dark. Furnished starkly and everywhere the paint work and upholstery getting tired. Very noisy overnight with people leaving the restuarant and calling out. Bathroom toiletries very basic, more like a motel, no tissues or shower cap etc. Would have expected these in a place marketed as boutique. The only good thing was the breakfast, very nice. Wouldn't stay here again.

After an exhausting and busy hot day, we looked forward to our stay at this hotel.

Expecting luxury, and having bought into the severely cropped photographs offered on their website, we were expecting a nice, comfortable overnight stay.

We arrived to a less than hospitable concierge, and were advised to carry all our luggage up a rather large flight of stairs.

There were no coffee and tea facilities in the room. They were available down stairs in the "library" full of uninviting old 60's literature. There was a coffee making machine there with no instructions, and the milk warmer was out of order. So you could have yourself an espresso coffee so long as you liked it black.

We paid $239 for a family room. The TV was missing it's cover over the controls, and our toddler kept turning the volume on full ball. The window wasn't able to be shut properly, and every car that drove by, and every padestrian laughing and speaking outside was heard as if they were in the room with you.

The windows weren't draped, so the room was bright day and night. (At night time due to a well lit main street outside).

The hot water took a long time to get through the pipes in the bathroom.

I wouldn't stay here again even if it was free.
