Description: The great Aussie hotel is an icon of our culture. It's said that they are the soul of a town, where the beer is cold, the food is honest and yarns are spun. That can certainly be said for our town, which at one point in time had over 400 hotels. The Bunch of Grapes is steeped in Ballarat history. Our exterior proudly states 1906 as the establishment date but records show the existence of a hotel on this site dating back to 1868 when a J. Currell was the publican. It has been a popular watering hole for all of its existence due to its great location but, in fact, it was probably at its most popular during World War II as it became the place to be for American marines who were stationed in Ballarat. The hotel is has always been closely tied with Ballarat and we're excited to infuse our menu with our regions fantastic produce. We're proud to be part of Ballarat and we reflect that in the historic building we find ourselves in and the honest, regionally sourced produce we turn into our meals.

We have eaten here twice recently. First time on Sat night it was booked out and incredibly noisy not helped by appalling behaviour of some patrons whose children ran screaming (literally) around the dining area a lot of the time, it made dinner conversation with anyone other than immediate neighbour difficult . If you have difficulty dealing with noisy places definitely avoid on busy nights. However the meals came surprisingly quickly given how busy and several large groups also all the table served at same time. The meals were to everyone's satisfaction the Laksa was very fresh and quite mild. On second occasion midweek nearly empty and service was terrible very long wait for our meals, again enjoyable when they did eventually come. Only other complaint is how incredibly uncomfortable the chairs are look cool but the backs slope too much to support you when sitting to eat and still not right for relaxing. I expected to like it much better on second visit just thought we were unlucky on first night can't help other patrons behaviour, but different problems caused by the hotel this time not sure I'd bother with a 3rd attempt especially given those uncomfortable chairs.

What a beautifully renovated pub! Unfortunately the service we received was terrible. The kids meals we ordered came out after all the adults meals, the staff we very rude after we had asked a couple of times about where these meals were. All our meals came out at different times, with a good 20 minutes before first and last. No apologies made. We had one extra person than we had booked for, and staff made a big fuss about having to find another chair. There was a function in the function room - though this shouldn't cause your staff to be hectic - put more staff on! The atmosphere was good - liked the gas fire in the wall. The food was average - I had fish that was drowned in oil. The steak looked sensational. The Caesar salad and risotto were also both average. Would not come back to this venue - plenty others around with better service and food. Overall, very disappointing.

Absolutely mortified by the spider which was found in the salad on my husbands plate then to be told by the so called manager LEAH that we weren't entitled to a cash refund only a voucher cause of course we would want to go back there for a meal. After arguing that we didnt order a spider on the plate we were given a cash refund with no apology. As a large family we were looking forward to trying somewhere different but after the disgusting service 20 people won't be returning

My husband and I had the lunch deal which was $16.50 for a glass of wine and a meal. My husband chose the Pizza and I had the Open Steak Sandwich . It was the best steak sandwich I had ever eaten. The staff were fantastic ,and the decor was lovely , cannot wait to go back again --this is a hidden gem

Lovely refit. Nice ambiance. Good looking menu that could be better executed. Will definitely give it another go, as the dining room has a restful feel and for a pub style bistro it is good value.
