Lovely old building, care taken with the refurb and decor to be modern but sympathetic to the period. Dinner in the restaurant also lovely and elderly relatives catered for well. Breakfast in The Lane Cafe was generous and good value. Point taken (from other reviews) about the glass wall on the bathroom meaning it lights up the room at night. This wouldn't be a problem in a double room, but the loss of privacy in a family room was a bit tricky. It was fine for us, but if taking grandma she may not be impressed. Parking is tricky, but not insurmountable. Friendly staff, good value for money - we'd stay again.

Room Tip: If mobility is an issue let them know - some rooms are a long walk from reception along corridors an...

We so wanted this hotel to amaze us - on the surface it offers so much and the owners have clearly put a lot of money into the hotel - and I so wanted to give this a good review ... but there are soooo many things wrong, I'm not sure where to start.

But let's start with the rooms. We choose to stay in one of the Executive Suites as it offer up self-contained accommodation and the option for our daughter to stay (in a sofa bed) and i have to say, they look impressive. The bed was excellent and the room spacious and modern. However, the problems, alas, re many. Let's start the in the bathroom. It was an elegant touch to use a wall of frosted glass to separate the bathroom from the bedroom - looks mightly impressive when you walk in the room - but the problem becomes obvious when someone tries to use the bathroom at night ... doing so lights up the entire room like a pillar box - waking all and sundry in bed. The shock I got when our daughter went to the toilet at 2am nearly threw me out of bed!!!

The other, more insidious, problem however is the noise. Our room was on the 2nd floor ... directly above one of the hotels function rooms (whoever invented doof-doof music has a lot to answer for. Thankfully the "function" finish by 9pm but we heard everything and every guest. Next up was the function centre across the street who, in their wisdom, decided to allow their function to put a live band on the front balcony - mere meters from our room across the street - and who played constantly till 11pm. Then there were the drunks who spilled out of the hotels at 3am and duely started brawling in the streets under our windows - the following night they followed up with a stabbing around 5am.

The problem here is that the hotel is in nightlife central - great if you're there to party and probably better on a week night - but on a weekend, don't even think about it.

And yes, the parking is horrendous - you need to be houdini to twist your way in with a a decent sized car and, because of the salubrious surrounds, it gets locked up at night - we came down at 6:30am for an early start on Saturay only to find our car "impounded" and thus had to scour the premises for a) a member of staff and b) someone who could open the doors.

And finally we come to the restaurant. Again, it offered so much - nice looking menu - but the service is horrendous. We ordered a simple starter followed by our mains. We waited and waited, eventually our daughters meal arrived - we asked where our starters were - they apologized and went back to the kitchen - small mix up, they'd be out soon. We waited, our daughter finished her meal, then our starters arrived. Plates were cleaned up and we awaited the swift rival of our mains ... and we waited again. Eventually, after an hour and a half, someone came over and asked if we'd like dessert - not quite the response he was expecting. I don't blame the staff - they were doing the best job they could - the problem was organization - no one was watching over service and the staff relied on the kitchen (located 20-30m away) for promoting them. So all it took was one mixup and the whole lot came adrift.

I suspect if you're in town to prty, then this is the place for you - my only concern is that, given the amount of money spent on the rebuild, this isn't the clientele the owner might've hoped for. If you're after a quiet stay in pleasant surroundings, with excellent service - I suggest you try elsewhere.

Nice comfortable and clean hotel in the heart of Ballarat. Historical building with beautiful architecture to admire. Also, be ready to test your driving skills as it has the most challenging parking available at the back of the hotel with narrow passageways and 2 x 90 degree turns plus narrow parking when you eventually get into the carpark area.

Room Tip: Try choose a room at the end of corridor to avoid other patrons walking pass your room as the sound...

Thanks you for your comments we appreciate the feed back. We are aware of the terrible parking situation which with heritage style old hotels is hard to avoid as they were not built with parkiing in mind. However we have almost completed works on a new laneway adjoining the property which will include alfresco cafe, cider bar and coffee shop and will also join our new car park and laneway for a much easier entry to the hotel. This will open by the end of November. The current parking will be used for more restaurants.

Great location and lovely building.

I stayed overnight with a friend and we arrived in the afternoon. The gaming woman was kind of put out that I had to bother her to check in, but the guy was helpful enough. Parking was a bit of a pain and involved traipsing around alley ways uncertainly out the back, but eventually it worked out.
Was lovely to hang out on the balcony roadside for a couple of hours in the afternoon. It was quiet and we were entirely undisturbed. The room was really nice, clean and well-made. With space and a modern bathroom. Didnt get backtil late, so next time I saw the staff was at check out. Nobody seemed interested in our stay at all, which is fine for me (I thought it was amusing), but for people who like a bit of personal treatment, you won't find it here.

Shoulder shrug and 'fine' is how I feel about it.

I stayed in an Executive suite after been the last in our group to book, and this was all that remained. The $40 extra a night was worth every cent.

The oversize room with bedroom and sitting room were well appointed. Bathroom was clean, new and fresh.

I could not find a thing to complain about. The service was of the highest level, food in Resturant downstairs great. We turned up for dinner at 8 pm, 15 of us and one chef one waiter to serve. They were great, the food of top standard and have to recommend. Thanks to the Chef and waiter for their efforts with an unexpected large group.

My wife and I stayed at the George overnight and it was great. The room was well equipped and sound proof. This was especially important as there was function on at the hotel and we couldn't hear a thing. The room itself was modern. with a large bed and a big shower.

The only downside of the hotel is the large gaming room on the ground floor. However, this is becoming the norm amongst these smaller hotels to ensure they can bring in additional revenue.

Ballarat is a great historical town, well worth a visit.

Room Tip: Ask for a room which is away further down the hall, rather than right near the security doors. The d...
