Description: Local Food, local wine, local talent.... Stillwater's food and wine philosophy: Our food is fresh, grown locally by passionate producers who rely on the attributes of our natural environment. Our State regulations keep the modification out of our genetics, the artificial out of our hormones and the free in our ranging animals. We know grass fed, antibiotic free, natural, happy animals make better meat....even if they aren't 'super sized'. Our water is clean, sourced from Cape Grim on Tasmania's North West Coast, home of the cleanest air on the planet. Our wines flow from around the State but being located in the Tamar Valley means Stillwater is a cornerstone for the local vignerons hosting a list that showcases the highly respected local tipples. Stillwater Partners: The Stillwater owner partnership is home grown as well, raised in a community that nurtures its youth and cares about its neighbours. Stillwater Restaurant: Being fortunate enough to live and work in one of the most beautiful places on the planet is one of the bonuses for the team at Stillwater River Cafe, Restaurant and Wine Bar. Situated in the historic Ritchie's Mill at the mouth of the Cataract Gorge on the banks of the Tamar River in Launceston, Tasmania the restaurant glows with the authentic warmth only an 1830's timber building can offer. The casually elegant ambiance ensures guests feel welcome and comfortable whether enjoying a casual breakfast, corporate lunch, special dinner, a glass of wine after work or just a coffee. Comprised of a number of spaces Stillwater has a main dining room that seats guests comfortably amongst the Oregon timber beams and Kauri pine floors and the original bluestone wine cellar full of character as well as fabulous wines. On fine days the outdoor courtyard offers views overlooking the Tamar River and the Wine Bar adjacent to the entrance is a great retreat for a bar snack and cocktail. Stillwater is open 7 days a week for breakfast and lunch and Tuesday* through Saturday for our indulgent evening menu (*subject to winter hours), reservations are highly recommended. A vibrant centre of the local community, Stillwater has achieved many hospitality, wine and business awards over the years from local to National for all aspects of the business. Stillwater Providore: The food theme continues throughout the building with The Providore above Stillwater showcasing our fabulous local produce in a deli and food shop alongside talented local arts, craft and homewares.

“Fantastic Fish”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 30, 2010

Inside, Stillwater has a pleasant modern atmosphere despite being in the shell of an old mill. You can get a bit of "river views". In a recent dinner for two, my wife had "the best fish I have ever eaten" (and she eats fish a lot).
Service was attentive but not over-the-top, wine by the glass was reasonably priced, and the other courses were also good.
This is not cheap dining, but more for an "occasional splurge". It compared very favourably with good restaurants in the mainland capitals.

“A terrible lunch”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 19, 2010

We had tempura fish with a glass of local wine. The fish was way overcooked; the batter was tight to the fish and tasteless; the vegetables were cold and tasteless. Service was poor - the kitchen had to "ping" twice before our food was brought. We were served water - lukewarm - in what looked like jam jars. There was absolutely no finesse and no atmosphere. The fish appeared for all the world as though it had been cooked from a pre-cooked packet of frozen fish bits. It was the worse meal we have had in Launceston - and, we have had many.

“Possibly the best in Launceston”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 27, 2010

I've eaten here twice. The first time I had the 6 course tasting menu with matching wine. Each course was uniformly exquisite and the service was spot on.
On my second visit, I choose from the small a la carte menu and my selection (duck) was very good although the drumstick was a teensy bit dry. The service was good but a little rushed and certainly little details (such as offering pepper) were overlooked and I had to ask myself. For these reasons I've rated the restaurant as a four not a five although on a good day is is a clear 5.

“Overrated & disappointing!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 29, 2010

We had a couple of really disappointing meals during our 2 weeks tour of Tasmania in March and dinner at Stillwater was one of them. We had their 6 course Tasting Menu with matching wines and the overall experience was disappointing.

Some of the 6 courses eg the yellow fin tuna & lime grilled whitefish were very good in taste & presentation. Unfortunately we could not say the same for the other courses which were mostly bland and poorly presented. The matching wines were generally quite good.

The biggest disappointment of the night was the service. Our designated waitress (Jess) was unwelcoming and unfriendly. She delivered the food, wine and wine description as quickly as she could. As soon as she finished her last word she would bolt off quickly. We had to ask her to fill our glasses with water several times during the evening. She forgot to give us back our jackets (in their storage) when we were leaving. Luckily we remembered when we stepped outside. It was a very disappointing dining experience at $144 pp

Great food, lovely setting, but a quite limited menu. Great wine list and deli section. Also has a chocholate bar with great deserts. One of best places to eat in Launceston.
