Description: Local Food, local wine, local talent.... Stillwater's food and wine philosophy: Our food is fresh, grown locally by passionate producers who rely on the attributes of our natural environment. Our State regulations keep the modification out of our genetics, the artificial out of our hormones and the free in our ranging animals. We know grass fed, antibiotic free, natural, happy animals make better meat....even if they aren't 'super sized'. Our water is clean, sourced from Cape Grim on Tasmania's North West Coast, home of the cleanest air on the planet. Our wines flow from around the State but being located in the Tamar Valley means Stillwater is a cornerstone for the local vignerons hosting a list that showcases the highly respected local tipples. Stillwater Partners: The Stillwater owner partnership is home grown as well, raised in a community that nurtures its youth and cares about its neighbours. Stillwater Restaurant: Being fortunate enough to live and work in one of the most beautiful places on the planet is one of the bonuses for the team at Stillwater River Cafe, Restaurant and Wine Bar. Situated in the historic Ritchie's Mill at the mouth of the Cataract Gorge on the banks of the Tamar River in Launceston, Tasmania the restaurant glows with the authentic warmth only an 1830's timber building can offer. The casually elegant ambiance ensures guests feel welcome and comfortable whether enjoying a casual breakfast, corporate lunch, special dinner, a glass of wine after work or just a coffee. Comprised of a number of spaces Stillwater has a main dining room that seats guests comfortably amongst the Oregon timber beams and Kauri pine floors and the original bluestone wine cellar full of character as well as fabulous wines. On fine days the outdoor courtyard offers views overlooking the Tamar River and the Wine Bar adjacent to the entrance is a great retreat for a bar snack and cocktail. Stillwater is open 7 days a week for breakfast and lunch and Tuesday* through Saturday for our indulgent evening menu (*subject to winter hours), reservations are highly recommended. A vibrant centre of the local community, Stillwater has achieved many hospitality, wine and business awards over the years from local to National for all aspects of the business. Stillwater Providore: The food theme continues throughout the building with The Providore above Stillwater showcasing our fabulous local produce in a deli and food shop alongside talented local arts, craft and homewares.

We had never dined at Stillwater, so jumped in the deep end with the six course tasting menu with matching wines. It was worth every cent! Each dish was beautifully presented, accompanied with a brief explanation by our waiter. Every mouthful was delicious. By the end of the meal we were pleasantly full and extremely satisfied with the portion sizes.

The atmosphere is comfortable and informal, and we heard no traffic from the very busy road close by. The staff were all friendly and attentive, and never obtrusive.

Our entire evening was so pleasant - I very much look forward to eating there again.

The food whilst good actually played second fiddle to the amazing service we received - probably the best I have had in my travels and certainly the best i have experienced in Australia of late. The room is also fantastic and the setting overlooking the river magic. We also opened (to everyone's delight) a bottle of 1984 Heemskerk Cab from the local area. It held up surprisingly well and was a treat. We had such a great time we went back for breakfast the next day and sat outside and were not disappointed. If in Launceston (or nearby) don't miss it.

We were generally happy with the appetizers (oysters and seared scallops) and the mussel and fish in curry sauce. The fish was excellent! However, we were extremely disappointed in their beef (marble 7+ grass fed?) and even so their response when we told them the beef was very very tough with a funny taste. This is not like the first beef we had in life but the manager made us feel like we were. Anyhow we had the same (but of higher grade, 9+) at Rockpool in Melbourne and have to say that the one prepared at Stillwater (we can't say for all but perhaps accidentally just that few pieces we had) was just too tough / raw. The whole experience could have been improved if the manager dealt with it differently, or perhaps we were just expecting too much because we saw all the good reviews and the ranking at Tripadviser. Unfortunately, that was the only meal we had in Launceston but e.g. Ethoes in Hobart was by far better!

A friend and I were walk-ins for lunch last Saturday and had a lovely lunch. I ordered the special sesame chicken and glass noodle salad and was not disappointed! My friend had the trusted lamb wrap. Wine a bit pricey but excellent choices and great service throughout lunch.
