Me and my husband stayed at Ashton Gate Guest House for 2 nights and were really impressed! The rooms are so beautiful and decorated with great sophisticated taste to Victorian era (we stayed at William), everything is so comfortable and clean. We spent some time in the lounge room that is the most amazing and comfortable lounge room I have ever seen, we played chess and cards while having complimentary wine or tea with home made biscuits. Breakfast was so delicious and there was a good choice of egg dishes. Loved the atmosphere of this house and hospitality of Jennifer. If you are to stay in Launceston look no further, highly recommend!

Room Tip: Loved William room

We stayed just one night. The room was nice and the accommodation was quiet. The lounge was comfortable with port, tea and huge cookies on offer. We found the male host extremely friendly and chatty.

In the morning breakfast was lovely but the female host was a little rude and cold and we didn't feel very welcome at breakfast. We made a few small requests to changes on our cooked breakfasts which seemed to be the most difficult thing in the world for her to cope with and she almost argued about it with us (I think it was something as simple as adding a dash of cheese or something!). We felt very uncomfortable after this as we are used to hosts who go out of their way to please you.

We would probably stay here again and would hope that this was just a one off grumpy morning for our hostes.

The owners, Jenny and John are most welcoming and from our experience find it hard to accept some comments posted on this site. John was a mine of information on places to visit and excellent restaurant recommendations.

Both Jenny and John made us welcome and offered access to their wi-fi and at no cost - large hotels please take note!

We shall recommend Ashton Gate to friends and will return.

We stayed for two nights and would happily have stayed longer. We were welcomed by John who, as we had asked for twin beds & a bathtub, had put us in the spa suite. Contrary to a previous review, we found both proprietors to be unfailingly friendly and helpful and a fount of local knowledge & John has a wonderful sense of humour. The lounge, with its complimentary port and home-made biscuits, is a delight and well equipped with books which John encourages one to use as a book exchange (take one, leave one).

Breakfasts are freshly cooked and served with home made bread and jams. Dinner is not served but there is an exhaustive list of eating places in a folder in the lounge, supplemented by John’s verbal recommendations (we particularly enjoyed the Indian restaurant Pickled Evenings down the hill). The lounge also has an extensive list of sightseeing recommendations.

Everyone seems to know Ashton Gate. Both ladies on the Avis desk at the airport knew it and gave us simple directions. There is adequate parking on the service road (we were invited to park on the drive outside the door to our room).

The location means that the comfortable rooms are quiet and provide everything one could want. If we return to Launceston, we shall definitely stay here.

If you are heading east, try the Holy Cow café at Pyengana (half way to the coast); the best burger I’ve ever had and the cake with their ‘cake & coffee’ package is to die for. If you head west, visit the Mole Creek caves - Marakoopa for the glow-worms and King Solomon’s for the atmosphere (King Solomon’s seems to be less popular – we were the only two on the 3.30 tour which was great for us – but is definitely worth a visit).

We stayed at Ashton Gate B & B for 2 nights on a 2 week self drive holiday around Tasmania in January this year. Ashton Gate is a beautiful Victorian period home in a great location. The rooms are all tastefully decorated in period furniture with a modern and roomy bathroom. The bed was very comfortable and everything was spottlessly clean. Jennys breakfasts each morning were 1st class and Johns hospitality made our stay very enjoyable. I wouldn't hesitate in staying here when I return next time.

Upon our arrival the male owner was quite welcoming however he soon lost his pleasant demeanour; each time we encountered him afterwards it was as though we were a nuisance. The cooked breakfast was very average and the lady owner serving the meals was not very friendly which was a shame as the breakfast room itself was well presented with a nice ambiance. On the up side the house itself is lovely and the common room was a great place to sit and enjoy the various books/magazines, music and complimentary port, which was a nice touch. I would have enjoyed my time at Ashton Gate a lot more had the owners been more friendly throughout our stay.
