“Noisy 6am gym across the road”
Reviewed September 4, 2012

Stayed here one night for work recently and it was perfectly adequate for a business trip. We ate at a hotel restaurant and the food and service was good. But at 6am the next morning there was a loud, full on doof gym class across the road and I certainly couldn't sleep through it. This is a problem with the neighbours rather than with the hotel itself, but it is a problem. Sadly, I would recommend staying somewhere else if you want a full night's sleep.

Room Tip: Choose a room at the back of the hotel - away from the noisy gym

Thankyou pigeondog for taking the time to post a response to your stay.
I am delighted you enjoyed the service and facilities at the Sebel Launceston.
While we are not the only business within Launceston and we do have to respect the operations of our neighbouring businesses, the noise at 6 am was unacceptable. I have personally spoken to the operators with reference to your letter about it and they are very willing to work together so both businesses can operate harmoniously. This relationship has always been present as they do provide special casual rates for guests of our hotel.
We look forward to your next stay.
Kind Regards

This hotel has a great location on the edge of Launceston city with only a five minute walk to the CBD or the waterfront restaurants. Rooms are bright, cheerful and comfortable. The kitchenette area is large with plenty of cupboards for food etc. if you're having an extended stay. Bathroom is large with separate bath and shower. Toilet has it's own room but has no ventilation. Lounge area is a little cramped but adequate. The separate bedroom is adequate in size with a comfortable king size bed. Housekeeping is a generally good standard but there was mould in the shower. This has been mentioned by previous reviewers as far back as 2007. Staff were friendly and courteous. Food from the restaurant is very good and not overly expensive. Despite their assurance that maintenance is a high priority, a fault I reported was not attended to in the 3 days we were there. Being on a corner with traffic lights, the rooms and outdoor restaurant area, are prone to traffic noise and the music from the health club across the street. Would I stay here again or recommend to friends, Yes & Yes.

Thankyou Karl S for taking the time to post a response on your visit.
I am very pleased you enjoyed your overall stay at the Sebel Launceston.
I have updated your profile, should you be staying at the hotel to have a room allocated on another side of the hotel. In general we do have a very good relationship with the gym across the road and can even provide special casual rates for guests of the hotel. The noise rarely is an issue and I do take any comment to their management should they arise. They are in general very obliging and do react to our requests for quieter gym noises from the classes early in the morning or later in the evenings.
In the quieter months we do focus on the condition of the hotel. We have almost finished our yearly re-painting of the doors and corridors and the next is to have the grouting replaced in some of the showers. Whilst the showers are cleaned and bleached daily, over some period it does get in behind the grout and this will be complete in the coming weeks.
We do look forward to your next stay when next in Launceston.
Kind Regards

Large, quiet, comfortable rooms with good amenities. Well positioned at the river end of the CBD. Restaurant was closed Sunday night although room service was available. Breakfast in restaurant was good but seemed oddly limited in the number of coffees and hot dishes included. Also be aware that an $8 undercover, off-street car parking fee is charged per night.

Thankyou WestyTweedValley for posting a response on your stay at the hotel.
I am very pleased you enjoyed your stay at the hotel. The restaurant is closed on our quietest trading day, Sunday nights but as you mentioned we do have the entire menu available through room service.
We do have limited under cover parking with direct access to the hotel and is $8 per day. The carpark, as with most other cbd hotels is managed by a separate company.
On street metered parking surrounding the hotel is available at $3 an hour and is free at night, most of the weekend and public holidays.
We hope you have an opportunity to visit Tasmania again some time.
Kind Regards

Large room, very friendly staff, within walking distance of the football ground. I didnt think the room was noisy at all. Charging for car parking was the only issue, I ended up parking outside. I choose this hotel as I was attending an AFL match. I had room service and the food was good and arrived in a timely manner and was nice and hot.

We are delighted you enjoyed your stay at the Sebel Launceston. Whether it is an AFL game at Aurora Stadium or any other activity within Launceston, our location ensures most places are within walking distance.
As we have limited parking and is managed by a seperate company, it is on a user pay system as in the case with most of the other cbd hotels
There is metered street parking surrounding the hotel which is free most of the weekend, overnight and public holididays but does not have direct undercover access to the hotel.
I will also pass on your comments to the kitchen team on the nice, hot food you received to your room.
We do look forward to your next stay when in Launceston hopefully for AFL next year.
Kind Regards

Large comfortable room, large bathroom, good quality furnishings and friendly staff. This hotel has a great feel the staff at reception are warm and helpful.
Yes you can hear the town hall clock..the clock has probably been there 100 years prior to the hotel... Don't let that put you off staying at the Sebel as it is excellent

Firstly, let me say I liked the sound of the Church chimes and in no way did it interfere with my sleep. I found it quaint and somehow in keeping with the heritage feel of Launceston. Let's hope they NEVER silence them.
Overall this is a modern hotel with spacious rooms. At $169 per night it was good value.
My only gripe was the parking - very skinny design. The parking costs an extra $8 per night and if you drive a skinny car it is ok, but if you drive a landcruiser then you will need to park on the street. Even driving a nissan X-trail was too tight to get out of the car once it was in the bay. We ended up changing our mind and just parked on the street.
Friendly staff, really loved the room and the charming church chimes!

Room Tip: Lower floors are fine.

We stayed for one night in a fabulous "King Spa Suite". We enjoyed a spa in the big clean bathroom whilst nibbling on the complimentary delicious fudge and port before settling into the big comfy bed for a good night's sleep...or so we hoped. The town clock (which, if it wasn't opposite the hotel seemed that way) chimed every quarter of an hour! Not just boing boing on the hour, but it gave you warnings at 1/4 past, 1/2 past and 1/4 to, to let you know the big daddy chime was coming up next. And every time the big daddy sang, so did his choir of noisy children!

Obviously this is out of the control of the hotel, but it did spoil what would otherwise have been a great stay.

If anyone can convince the Launceston City Council to quieten the clock then you will not find a better place to stay in a great location. Until then, pack your earplugs (because there aren't any supplied even though they're well aware of the problem!)

Thankyou barrydoll for taking the time to post a response to your stay at the Sebel Launceston.
We are very happy you enjoyed the standard of the hotel.
Despite request to have the bell altered for the nights by hotels within the cbd, it is a heritage listed building and will remain a feature of this city.
We have updated your profile so that your next room should you stay will be on the other side of the building. Again for the light sleepers, we do now have ear plugs.
We hope to see you again at the Sebel Launceston when next visiting the area.
