“Love it, but......”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 18, 2011

I have always loved this hotel and have stayed on numerous occasions. The positives are: Lovely entrance, a true country club feel. Staff have always been friendly and attentive. Public areas have always been spotlessly clean. Lovely outlook from the FRONT rooms. Rooms are generous in size for any hotel. The huge negative is the room decor. Sorry but I loved the feel of the hotel 14 years ago better than I do now. Then the Manor Suites (my favourite rooms) had that glorious old world feel to them, in line with the name of the property "Country Club" - but now they a mish-mash of colour and fabric. Without doubt money has been thrown at these rooms (the bathrooms in particular) but the colour schemes are way out there and really let them down. It looks like they need a soft refurb of the hotel now so hopefully that lovely old style returns as it really befits this property. Very disappointed in the buffet, very under par for the charge however the Tonic bar was very hip and groovy for a pre dinner drink. The Wintergarden bar is in dire needs of a makeover, can't believe how dirty the chairs were down there. Did not eat at their signature restaurant (The Terrace) this time but have in the past and it was always very reliable.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms overlooking the golf course, the rooms at the back look into a courtyard and depending...

After a two night stay at country club I was pleasantly surprised. The property has a grand entrance surrounded by golf course and horse paddocks. Our room was well appointed with doors opening onto the golf course. The pillows however were a bit of a let down. Service was excellent, Wayne on the front desk was friendly and helpful. Food was good and tonic bar had a great deck for beers. We had a spot of tennis which was random but fun. Country club lived up to it's name although the website needs work. We left relaxed and happy

My partner and I stayed in a Manor Suite over a weekend as a getaway. We purposefully booked a 5-star room, as we wanted the best. Service on arrival was fantastic, however upon entering our room we found the furniture was worn and mis-matched, the bedspread was red crushed velvet, which also looked tired and clashed with the bright pink flowers on the old, horrible looking curtains. Between the two bright yellow worn armchairs stood a multi-coloured striped couch, which also looked worn and dirty. After paying $480 for this room, it is safe to say we were more than disappointed...then we entered the bathroom! This ALMOST made up for the eye-sore that was the rest of the room. The bathroom was amazing! The shower was fantastic, the spa was excellent, and both seemed very clean and modern.
I wouldn't pay this much money to stay at this hotel again; had it not been for the bathroom we would have asked for a refund and gone back home!

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the golf course are quiet and the view is decent

Let's start with the good:

1. Beautiful surroundings, golf course and lakes. Very much a resort feel to it.
2. The driver/valet/bag guy was excellent - very nice and helpful.

Unfortunately, that's about it for the good. The bad:

1. Rooms haven't been touched in 20+ years. The bed had a sagging mattress, was only a double (rather than queen or king), the mattress and base was not attached to the headboard, so the bed literally moved around as you got in/out. The linen was ancient and bedspreads were cheap glossy material like old children's sleeping bags. These things don't require a renovation to fix - just update the furnishings and it would make a huge difference. Also, the walls were quite thin, so I was woken in the morning by someone watching TV in the next room.

2. Bathroom has a shower over bath, but the bath is raised so I was hitting my head on the ceiling as I was trying to shower. The shower nozzle was about chest height, and the water pressure and hot/cold mixer seemed to constantly change, which made the shower very unpleasant. The bath also looked filthy (more from age than actual lack of cleanliness).

3. Business centre PC's were about 10 years old (with 14 inch screens!), so most websites refused to load (gmail etc).

4. Pool area is indoors, very small pool (about 10m x 3m) and whirlpool. No lockers, grotty changerooms. Unclear what you're meant to do in the pool - way too short for laps, and not a pleasant place to lounge around.

5. Service was left wanting - some attitude, particularly at the front desk. Requests were often denied, and certainly without a smile or apology.

6. Food at the Links restaurant was largely buffet style, not bad but pretty stodgy, unexciting offerings. Best part was dessert, of which there were lots to choose from, and which were delicious.

In summary, this is still a pretty grand building in a beautiful setting, but it simply isn't worth visiting until they update the rooms and common areas.

We booked a one bedroom villa, there are also two and three bedroom villas available, away from the actual Country Club premises. We were very impressed with the cleanliness, quietness and condition of the villa. Our back door led out onto a private grassed area with an outdoor setting of table and two chairs with views across the golf course. The bird life was amazing with a variety of species flying about and singing. Small considerate touches ie. large umbrella available tucked away in the wardrobe and room service available 24 hours. Austar was included with a variety of channels to choose from plus an extensive library of DVDs and in house movies. Milk and soft drinks were available to purchase from reception and a modern bottle shop on site for convenience. There is a free shuttle bus to the Club a couple of minutes away which runs constantly 24 hrs and the staff are very helpful and friendly. We booked a show and paid a little extra for the dinner package at The Terrace Restaurant. Expecting a basic plain meal we were delighted and surprised at the level of menu choices available. We were treated like royalty and little aperitifs were served as extras before our entrees. Delicious home made sourdough was served with vinegar and oil. The staff were discreet but attentive. My Pork Belly was superb and my partner had the 300g sirloin with a small tray containing a variety of two mustards, a wasabi foam, red wine jus and lemon. To finish the meal we enjoyed a delicious cup of Chai Tea.

Room Tip: We were in room 153 which backed onto the golf course.

I was here on a work trip...And always enjoy my time here. Although the room's are a little dated, they are big & clean. There are free movie's & a good range of foxtel channels. There are many dinning options (I LOVE the buffet lunch dessert section: YUM!) They have updated the front bar: looks cool, and the free shuttle to the woodfire pizza place is a nice touch....All in all a nice place to stay.
