Stay in Penny Royal Historic house is what I am looking for. Looking at other comments and booked 2 nights there. The apartment hotel is not in the main building and situated 5 mins walk from the reception. The penny royal is gorgeous outside. Car can park in front of the house. We need to take our luggage to the fist floor and feel exhausted cause there is no lift. When we opened the door, the apartment is really HOT and there is only one small fan to ventilate the air inside. Dur to the hot summer season in end of Jan and we couldn't sleep due to the heat trapped in the flat. The room is not very comfort and a bit ageing. The good thing is the lounge is big and we can sit down and have dinner together with other friends. In general, the apartment hotel is fine for short stay with family and friends.

Initially, I was a big leery of staying at this property...but the price pulled me in. The hotel is an old gunpowder mill that has been rehab'd into a very charming little hotel. I enjoyed the ambiance of the old mill look, the beams in the rooms, lighting, windows and the old heavy doors. My only critiques of my stay would be---no air conditioning (although the night we were there it was cool and it wasn't bad) and the VERY slow internet you have to pay $7.95 an hour to use. If you're going to provide a pay service type of internet, please use something that runs a bit faster than being able to upload only one photo in the hour you're paying an outlandish fee to use. The location of the hotel was nice and we didn't eat at the restaurant. The showers had good pressure, the beds were comfortable. I would very stay here again.

Room Tip: We stayed in the main hotel area, second floor. We did not experience any issues with noise from oth...

We stayed for two nights as part of a trip to Tasmania. The girls at reception were so helpful and friendly. We stayed in St Andrews Suite room- very spacious, comfortable bed and adequate bathroom. We loved the old mills and also enjoyed dinner in the restuarant. Sadly we will not return to Tasmania again (its just too far!) but we would recommend this hotel for comfort and location.

Room Tip: If you visit the Gorge go early in the morning- it is peaceful and not far to go. Also worth a vis...

We're a couple, quick overnight stay in January 2012. Had a room on the first floor, opposite reception for $A95 room only. Good bed, good bathroom, friendly reception and a $7 taxi ride from centre of town.. What was a little strange was the absence of a window - completely enclosed inside room with a sort of Frankenstein motif - heavy wooden doors and low beams. In full daylight you had to have all the lights on. No air conditioning, quite stuffy. Breakfast at the downstairs restaurant was dire - there's much much better in town at the same price.

Room Tip: Ask for something with an outside window.

We (4 adults from one family) stayed for 2 nights in mid January at the apartments (barracks) further along the road (all part of the same group). We thought the noise from the cars passing on the West Tamar overpass would be a distraction but it was quiet in the late evening and we did not have any problems. I have read all previous comments which seem reasonable. If you are fussy then this place is not for you. But we thought it was fantastic with the pathway to Cataract Gorge next door and the wonderful restaurants along Seaport Boulevard just a short walk away across Royal Park. Great value and I am happy to recommend it.

Loved these rooms in the old mill, the refurbishment was done in a simple modern style that complimentet the original features (roof beams, old window and doorways) very well.
Some noice from the road can be expected, but it didn't keep us awake at night.
Very close to beautiful Cataract Gorge and approx. 15 minutes easy work to the centre of town or the seaport.

We stayed last week in a 2 bedroom apartment. It was a bit of an emergency trip - my husband needed urgent eye surgery that could only be done in Launceston so I did not have time to research. After booking on Agoda I was a bit dismayed after reading the TA reviews. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised.
The girls checking us in were really lovely and helpful. They changed our room to include a balcony.
Yes it is close to main road and you do hear traffic noise but really come on .... it’s Launceston – not a hugely busy city and not that bad. We live on a quiet street and the noise did not bother me and we were in apartment 141 which is one of the closest to the road.
The 2 bedroom apartments are on 3 levels. On entry is a separate toilet and bathroom – a combined bath and shower. The bathroom light issue mentioned in an earlier post seems to have been addressed – it does not turn itself off. The bathroom is compact but shampoo, conditioner and liquid soap provided
Up a narrow steep flight of steps are the two bedrooms. The bedrooms are in the eves and as it was a warm day – they were hot and stuffy and there was no air conditioning – only a fan in the main bedroom. It did cool down at night though so it was ok for sleeping.
Down stairs is a room with dining table pushed against a wall, strip kitchen and TV. All new except for the ancient TV. It’s not huge and ceilings are low from my perspective as I live in a house with 12’ ceilings. The place is fairly bare and would be much nicer with a painting on the wall. It suited our needs though. The kitchen has 2 hot plates, small fridge, microwave and toaster. It also had the usual plates, glasses and utensils. They do provide a small carton of fresh milk on checking in and have instant coffee, sugar and teabags.
If you have mobility issues you may find the steps an issue and getting into the bath to have a shower. There is also an outside staircase of around 20 stairs to reach the 2 bedroom apartments. There is plenty of parking.
Overall I would stay there again and recommend it if you don’t want to spend a huge amount. I paid $200. I always have a bit of a beef that accommodation is so expensive in Australia when compared to what you get say in Asia – also why can you get free wifi when you buy a coffee in a cafe but not when you pay $200 for one nights’ accommodation? It is in Australia though and you get what you get. It was clean, the beds were comfy and the staff helpful.
Sorry about the photos I always forget to taken them when we first get there and before we make a mess!
