This was our 4th time staying at this hotel. The other 3 we had a typical room, which was good value for the price. This time we upgraded to a suite in the original building itself. Lovely fireplace, new kitchen & bathroom, extremely modern yet not out of place, in this historic building. Was well worth the extra money and made it a wonderful 2 nights visiting my family. Will definitely request this room every time. Had dinner at the 3 Steps Restaurant both evenings, First class, great ambiance and food. Would definitely recommend.

Room Tip: If you can try and stay in the main building.

Hubby and I have stayed a couple of times in the past few months. We chose this place on both occasions because it appeared to be best value for money. On neither occasion did we find anything to either rant or rave about, but it's just an honest, good value, well located place to stay for a night or two.

Ironically, and apparently unintentionally, on both occasions we were given the same room. On the positive side the room boasted a newly refurbished bathroom which was spacious, modern and clean. The bed was also very comfortable. On the down side, its position on the junction of a walkway exposed it to lots of pedestrian traffic getting in and out of their rooms during the night.

The booking included a continental breakfast, but you could upgrade to a fully-cooked buffet for an additional $5 per person, which we did on both stays. The pancake machine was fabulous! The only complaint regarding breakfast was that they couldn't seem to co-ordinate bacon, eggs and mushrooms all being cooked at the same time.

On our last stay, because we we didn't leave our room until 11am to go out for the day, we returned to find it hadn't been made up, and there was a note saying that it wouldn't be made up because housekeeping stopped work at 11am. That was a bit disappointing. I'm sure I could have asked for fresh towels, but didn't feel like doing that when we arrived back late at night.

We travel to Launceston a couple of times per year and would happily stay here again, though might try somewhere else if the price was comparable.

From the old historic buildings set amongst the beautiful gardens to the room we stayed in, everything was perfect. We ordered room service for dinner and ate in restaurant for buffet breakfast, both meals divine. On checkout the friendly staff went out of their way to explain the history of the buildings, letting us explore the engravings on the window sills. Thanks for the birthday present. We will be back.

I stayed at the Hotel when I visited Launceston to watch the Hawks play. The Director Dale showed us a photo of his son who had been to Afganastan on 4 occasions, fighting for his country. Dale chatted to me about the Hawthorn and showed a real interest in us. The rooms were very clean and everything was provided, mini bar, breakfast etc. The full breakfast was very nice. We will book in advance next year when we visit to watch the Hawks, or whenever we visit relatives in Launceston. Helen Crossin

Headed up from Hobart for a soccer tournament on a footy weekend so accommodation was tough to find. The Colonial was great value and two block from the city centre but away from the noise. Room was great, not ultra modern but homely. Shower was hot and powerful with a fully renovated bathroom. Hot and cold water shared with next room though i think so you might get a blst of cold if the toilets are flushed. But the staff were what made it a great stay. We had some neighbours that were enjoying their friday night (despite losing the cricket) and reception politely asked them to keep it down when we were trying to sleep. Extremely helpful sorting out our breakfasts, the room's internet and a late checkout. If you want a good value place in a greart location with A+ customer service and don't mind it not being too modern, this is the place for you.

Recently, we stayed at Quality Hotel Colonial Launceston for two nights at a really good price There are some really good points and some below average points to mention.

The double bed we slept on was a below average mattress. It sunk inwards as you sat down. If two people slept on it, there wasn't enough bounce to support two people comfortably. The mattress was also too small for two people. My partner struggled to find enough room for his feet. Luckily it came with a spare single bed, so our nights were well managed with that extra mattress.

The other thing is the light. Our room was on the first floor with the balcony facing the car park and the reception. Due to having another building in front of our room and the shut curtains when you walked in, the room gave a dark feel to it. Relying just on the balcony windows, there was not enough light coming into the room.

The bathroom certainly delivered its 4.5 star quality. A wide square shower head with plenty of space. Reception's staff was very friendly and helpful. The location of the hotel is perfect. It is right in the middle of the city.

Room Tip: A room with light and a good mattress
