Owner description: Welcome to Australia’s largest regional museum The Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery (QVMAG) has enjoyed a long and proud tradition having celebrated its 120th anniversary in 2011. Today it has two key Launceston sites: the 19th century railway workshop at Inveresk which houses the natural science and history collections; and its 1891 Royal Park building on Wellington Street which was officially opened to the public as a dedicated Art Gallery last year. At Inveresk you’ll find our extensive permanent exhibitions Tasmanian onnections, Transforming the Island, hands-on science in the Phenomena Factory, Replay>> Sporting Life in Tasmania and the Heritage Trail. In addition there are a range of special exhibitions and our regular facilities including the Museum Shop, auditorium and café. As if Inveresk is not enough, there is even more at Royal Park. Make sure you visit both sites to really experience all that QVMAG has ‘On show’.

“Keep the kids entertained!”

Interesting museum. Plenty of activities for the kids. Tassie Tigers under glass, as well as dinosaur displays. Next to the tram museum where you can ride the tram for about $5. Great gift shop with large amount of gems, crystals, and fossils. No entry cost, though happily takes donations. Great little cafe on site.

“Loved it”
Reviewed January 1, 2014

It's sometimes just really nice to visit a quiet art gallery and view the paintings without having lots of people standing around you. There are some great paintings here, and the building is lovely (recently updated). There is also a nice cafe inside, and it's a great place to spend a couple of hours in the airconditioning away from the heat or cold. I'd definitely recommend it.

“Phenomenal !”
Reviewed December 31, 2013

I will start by saying- this great place is free, yes it's unbelievable but true. Located in place on the old railway station. Could easily spend 2 hrs here with 3 kids aged 9-11. Great science phenomenon room which is all hands on stuff (yes you can touch everything) with easy to understand captions, that room alone is worth going in for ! There are also other sections on railway, astronomy , animals, history of tassie and photo expo upstairs. The place is very clean, well looked after , staff are very friendly and helpful. Excellent find , highly recommended (especially on a rainy day) !

“Great place for kids”

Surprisingly deserted for a fun free experience in the school holidays. Our 9 year old loved it and husband loved poking around the huge blacksmith shop

“Great museum”
Reviewed December 25, 2013

A small museum, but really great collections. The Artrage student exhibition was one of the best collections we saw. Also a great exhibit on Tasmanian nature photography. Really helpful and friendly staff.
