Owner description: Welcome to Australia’s largest regional museum The Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery (QVMAG) has enjoyed a long and proud tradition having celebrated its 120th anniversary in 2011. Today it has two key Launceston sites: the 19th century railway workshop at Inveresk which houses the natural science and history collections; and its 1891 Royal Park building on Wellington Street which was officially opened to the public as a dedicated Art Gallery last year. At Inveresk you’ll find our extensive permanent exhibitions Tasmanian onnections, Transforming the Island, hands-on science in the Phenomena Factory, Replay>> Sporting Life in Tasmania and the Heritage Trail. In addition there are a range of special exhibitions and our regular facilities including the Museum Shop, auditorium and café. As if Inveresk is not enough, there is even more at Royal Park. Make sure you visit both sites to really experience all that QVMAG has ‘On show’.

OH and I visited the revamped gallery in town as we'd never been there before. We had visited the Inveresk site on a previous trip. We were impressed. Admission is free (donation encouraged).

After a very satisfying light lunch in the cafe (lots of gluten free options) we spent about 2 hours looking through the gallery. There was a travelling exhibition by a landscape artist I hadn't previously heard of (William Charles Piguenit) that was outstanding and an excellent exhibition of Tasmanian wilderness photography. We also found the standing exhibition of old Chinese temples interesting.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and would happily visit again.

Had been previously on my own, and took husband this time around. Heaps of things to see and do, in a very interesting location. Parking is reasonably priced, but you can also catch the free tiger shuttle bus. Entry is free. A great place for families. Excellent art displays and interactive activities.

We visited both the museum and art gallery, and caught a the free tiger shuttle bus to get between the two. Entry is free! The art gallery has wonderful displays of both traditional and modern art. The museum was great! It had scientific and historic sections, with a lot of information. We also attended a show in the planetarium about 'black holes', which was very informative. Highly recommended.

We loved that the museum catered for all ages. The hands on area was great and it was nice to not have to run after the kids and stop them from touching things. We'll be back again.
