AAJ India used to be quite popular but since Pickled Evenings arrived on the scene some years ago - it’s gone down hill and seems quite content there. I was here a few years back and I had a disappointing experience and, well, at least they’re being consistent. Things seemed to be amiss when I tried to contact the restaurant to make a booking. The phone rings through and the website no longer exists. I should have trusted my instinct and gone up to George Street.
Sadly, the dining area appears to be colonised by an old refrigerator and old lounge furniture. The restaurant was cold, and one of the plates on our table dirty. Virtually no one in the restaurant on a Friday night. Initially the waitress - who was friendly - appeared flustered. When the food arrived the beef and chicken dishes seemed to be mostly sauce, the quality was ok but certainly not anything to write home about. The butter chicken definitely was not “to die for” and the masala beef was tough. A number of small things that on their own wouldn’t be worth mentioning but when combined made for an ordinary dining experience. We would have been better off dining at home or getting take-away. It is no cheaper than better Indian restaurants in Launceston. I definitely won’t be returning again.
