Description: “Tasmanian Beef Specialist” Located in the historic art deco Luck’s Butchery shop in Launceston, Tasmania, Black Cow showcases grass fed, free range, hormone free, dry aged, premium Tasmanian beef including brands from Cape Grim, Greenhams, Clover Country, King Island and Flinders Island amongst others. Legislation in Tasmania against the use of hormone growth promotants and antibiotics in red meat production combined with Tasmanian graziers’ focus on free-range grass fed cattle produces happy animals and superior quality meat. A flexible pricing structure and side dishes designed around fresh, local produce allow guests to create the dining experience they desire. Also sporting a well-priced wine list with a heavy emphasis on local Tasmanian wines with some full-bodied reds thrown in for good measure. An energetic atmosphere and friendly professional service completes the Black Cow offering. This casual Bistro style has been a hit with the local community as well as visitors so reservations are essential. A private wine room offers dining for up to 12 guests for those important dinners and negotiations. Open 7 nights a week from 5:30pm to late. The Black Cow logo has been inspired by the amazing ancient artworks in the Lascaux Caves in France. Carbon dating indicates that these paintings are more than 17,000 years old. Black Cow, the name, is a tribute to the Bos Genus… Historically the cow has been important to many cultures. It has been seen and worshiped as a symbol of contentedness, fecundity, the passive yet creative and generative powers of nature, patience, nourishment, abundance, fertility and equifinality. It is also, of course, an excellent source of protein.

Our family are one of carnivores therefore we were looking forward to a meal at the Black Cow. How disappointed we were does not truly describe our experience. We had a reservation for 8 pm only to arrive and be told to come back in half an hour as our table was not ready. Upon returning we were seated at a tiny table in the window with not enough space for two, much less three. After a considerable wait we had our orders taken and sat back to enjoy. Our entrees took 40 minutes to arrive and were of an average quality. Our main courses finally arrived but unfortunately we are still waiting for our sides and sauces. After several requests they just did not eventuate, our wine finally arrived half way through our dinner and was hardly chilled. My other half decided that it was just never going to be an ideal situation to sit back with a cheese platter and a dessert wine so we paid the bill when it finallly arrived and left and went elsewhere fo afters. We have had seriously much better steaks at other restraunts we would not return and would not recommend this restraunt. Far too busy and seriously overcrowded with mediocre food. Life is way too short for this

There are two things you just cannot miss when visiting Launceston. one is the cateract Gorge and the other is Black Cow Bistro. As you might expect, Moo628 is exceedingly fond of steak and especially loves black cows.No Brainer!. Thank goodness this place lives up to its reputation then. The steak is fantastic, the service excellent and the wine list comprehensive. The side dishes were brilliant. The ambiance is very french- crowded, noisy but buzzy and fun. In a very quiet, low key town, Black Cow is like stepping into an alternate universe. You must book a long way ahead but it is worth the wait.

First up - the menu sucks you in and gives you a great bit of background information on the chef, hosts and source of the food.
There is ample choice on the menu and the most difficult thing was choosing what to eat. Even more difficult was what wine to drink but thank God for the great staff - always there to help make our experience that little bit better.
Ended up going for the Oysters (super fresh), Ocean Trout (out of this world) and the Eye Fillet Steak (cooked to perfection). What was really helped was the amazing wine selections we had to match each course. Capped it all off with a beautiful tawny port and left the Black Cow dreaming of when I'd go back.
Best meal I've had in years. Well done!!!

What more can we say. With such attentive, professional and swift service the dining experience was thoroughly enjoyable. When the meals arrived, the real pleasure began. No Steak will ever live up to the Black Cow! We will just have to fly back to Launceston.

The service was very friendly and even though they made one error with our order, it was rectified in a matter on minutes and they offered the item for free.
The steak was good (not the best I've ever had but good) and the desserts looks great and tasted wonderful.
