Glenelg Beach Hostel
Reviewed September 7, 2010

ive actually stayed at this hostel in january of 2009 and found it a great place but stayed there again in april 2010 and found the place is getting run down and getting a bit more unhygenic as in bathrooms and cleanliness of rooms. There is a bar open down stair which is open to the public and can get extremely noisy at night and with the passing by traffic of the two roads (as on the corner of main part of glenelg) so id suggest requesting a centre room and not one at back or front or dont expect much sleep.
The best bit bout this place is that there are no bunk beds and proffesionally cleaned linen however the duvets never seem to be cleaned.
people are genuinly nice but u really need to look for ur new friends as is a large place. nice lounge area with heaps of seating and tv and lots of computers for internet but needs to be payed.
They dont hold any activities such as pub rounds or night outs or activities so only social partying is in there own pub and that can get expensive. very close to beach and shops great location. Would not recomend for family holidays or for sport etc clubs to stay at and best to stay in summer

We decided to stay at this beach hostel after reading Lonely Planet and these reviews. Wow!! It is a nice old building but the place is very worn down and shabby. Yet our family room was still 100.00 per night. (3 people) The doors and bathrooms are dirty and the carpets are ripped up.We had to stay or forfeit the 200.00 for a two night prepaid stay. When asking for a refund, there was no way, and not much sympathy. I stayed in many hostels on this trip so this was not a new type of accommodation We did check around and there are NICE places that are 20.00 more. Great location but do not pay ahead!!!! Check it out first.

We stayed in this hotel during WOMAD festival. We booked for two nights but ended staying only one night as the room we booked has no windows at all and very very small (althought it was a triple room for two persons!). We upgraded to their family room with a window which cost the same as in a decent hotel.

There was a loud band playing in the semi-basement with no sound insulation at all so imagine.., we were lucky the band played quite good. We had no other choice than staying a night since I could not get back my payment for two nights. Their policy is no cancellation refund for 40 hours, so if you don't like the rooms then badluck, 2 nights money from your credit card is gone. My advice is to view the room first before paying.

The good thing, spring beds are very comfortable. The building is an old beauty, which with a bit of imagination & refurbishment could be a lot better hostel.
The rest of the trip we stayed at majestic minima hotel on north adelaide (great area) which was excellent and worth every cent.

The beach hostel at Glenelg was a busy place but the staff were welcoming and friendly. It was our first stay in a hostel and we found it to be very good value for money. The beds/linen were clean and the heritage building is great!

Glenelg is about 10 minutes drive from central Adelaide (and airport), or 20 minutes by the lovely old trams. It is the coastal resort for South Australia, has lots of bars, small resturants and shops.

The Esplande covers the entire front and beach, with a new development at one end with a marina, apartments and smarter dockside bars and resturants such as sushi etc.

Cheaper to stay in than central Adelaide, and handy for visiting attractions to the South, such as the wine growing areas and the absolute must when down this way - Kangaroo Island.
