This hotel commands the best position at Glenelg, Adelaide's busy beach suburb.. overlooking the Gulf of St Vincent. The rooms are rather spartan, sterile and about 1970s decor. The service and quality seems to have continually declined in the 13 years I've stayed at this hotel. What was once a superb 5 star breakfast, is now just a bland mixture of basic food. With limited competition in Adelaide, this hotel is still probably one of the best in town.. but more like 3 and half stars.

an attractive hotel nice pool quiet gym and excellent views, all this was let down for us when they play loud bass music till 3am sat sun and monday morning and i got no sleep till it stopped although i did complain and i was on the fourth floor also breakfast buffet at $30 a head was a bit over priced. and $15 a day to park your car in they're car park.

i will not stay there again

After hearing reviews both ways on this hotel from varied sources, I decided to give this hotel a shot. Sadly, i feel this opportunity to be a waste of what could have been a great night.

All the staff in the hotel were friendly and helpful, however i feel they were stretched beyond their limits. During dinner and breakfasts, there never seemed to be any staff free to help guests, apart from the minimum, and so such things as refilling coffee and removal of dishes was rarer than it should be. 2 calls were made to room service (once at 9pm the other 4.30pm the next day), and resulted both times in my call being diverted to reception, with the explaination that they were busy. Checkout also resulted in delays, however this was at a peak time so was understandable.

The room was clean, however definitely showing it's age. The airconditioning would not work, resulting in a blowheater being brought up to the room, hot water was definitely not hot anytime i tried to use it (Complaints were met with a request to allow the service to reheat and try again in 15 minutes - to no avail) and altogether was rather disappointing. I feel sorry for the staff having to deal with this, as it seems it is a common theme.

One last thing i wish to mention, and i hope this was a once off, but i noticed a group of cockroaches scurrying about in "Rickshaws" restaurant while it was closed. i assume the restaurant was closed for cleaning??

in summary: stamford, renovate your hotel, employ enough staff to provide good customer service, and keep the food outlets clean, and then i'd consider coming back.

Stayed here for 2 nights with husband and baby. The rooms were very dated and definately not 5 star. There were stains on the carpet and the room had an overall unclean feel to it. The staff were abrupt and not friendly at all. Would not pay full price for this hotel. Would not recommend.

When I arrived I was delighted to find that the hotel was right on the beach. I've stayed at many other properties that have been on the "beachfront" only to find that the hotel was nearish to the ocean. I ate at the hotel several times and found the food to be of an impressive standard and well priced, the staff were friendly and knew the menu well. The rooms were large comfortable and views fantastic. In fact the whole feel of the hotel and the surrounding area was fantastic. Its only 15 minutes from the city and central to everything. I will be stying here again when I return to Adelaide.

The Stamford Grand was our last stay in mainland Australia after travelling for 2 months and we decided to 'splash out'. We were so disappointed, we had stayed in about 20 hotel, motels B & Bs on our travels and this was by far the worst. It wasn't a cheap hotel and we expected far more from a 5* hotel. The member of staff at reception when we arrived needed some lessons in customer service! We had arrived a bit early and was told our room wasn't ready. OK that was our fault - got our timing a bit wrong, but we weren't even invited to have a drink whilst we waited so just sat in the main foyer.

We then discovered that we had to pay to park our car which given the amount we paid for our room should have been included. Also it was in the multi storey car park opposite - the lift and entrance area was filthy and had obvioulsy been used as a toilet!

Our room was ok and clean but no better than most of the motel rooms we had stayed in, there was tea and coffee making facilites but these were average and not very plentiful.

There is a bar on street level serving food but we did not eat there. We tried to go in for a drink after dinner one evening entering from the street and we were not allowed in as we were wearing sandals (not flipflops/thongs) We told the rather sinister looking doorman that we were staying in the hotel but he said we would have to go through the Hotel - utterly ridiculous!

Another evening we went in the cocktail lounge, I noticed it didn't look very clean but we stayed for a drink, we sat at a table with dirty dishes on it as it was the only one available near the windows (which have a wonderful view of the sea.) We had our drink and sat for a good 45 mins there, when we left the dirty dishes were still there!

My partner used the gents restroom on the reception floor a few times and the soap dispenser was empty each time he went in.

By this time my partner was absolutely furious and wrote a rather lenghty letter of complaint to the manager. We were invited to meet the accommodation manageress and she took all our complaints on board and apologised. She upgraded us to the VIP suite on our last night (we only stayed 3 nights)and we found a nice bottle of wine and chocolates in the room when we arrived. She said a copy of our letter would be sent to the various heads of departments so that all issues could be addressed.

Now for the positive bits! The hotel is in a fantastic location, beautiful sea views. The breakfasts were very nice and the waiters very good and efficient - I think some of them should be working on Reception!

This is not a 5* hotel and way overpriced! Complain if you are not happy!

This hotel is right on the beach. Wonderful outlook from the rooms, beautiful beach, great esplanade - what more could you want?

OK, like its city cousin, it is a bit on the jaded side but unlike its cousin, this place still has its grand old hotel style feel.

Rooms oldish but comfortable. I stayed in a room with the ocean view which I love. Breakfast downstairs was very good - dining room right by the beach and very pleasant start to the day.

Glenelg is about 20 minutes form the city and if I don't have tight meeting schedules, I would stay out here in preference every time.
