We unexpectedly had a night that we could get away after working 7 days a week for many months. The Grand was the perfect location for our one night get away. We booked on-line and took advantage of the $1 breakfast buffet offer. Our room rate also included a late check out and car parking (self park). The room (311) was very large (possibly designed for disabled guests). The staff were friendly and efficient. Breakfast was a good buffet style breakfast - we loved the egg station. The Grand is walking distance to all of Jetty Road and Holdfast Shores and a tram ride into Adelaide city. The views over the beach at Glenelg from the restaurant are lovely.

Dear CurlsOnTop

Thank you for taking the time to post your review following your “mini-break” with us. I am so pleased you were able to give yourselves a well earned rest and that you chose to do that here at the Stamford Grand. I was delighted to read that you had such a wonderful time and you took advantage of our great value Winter Warmer special. The full buffet breakfast is very popular with the locals as well as our hotel guests so I’m pleased you were able to enjoy that too. Thanks again for your comments and we look forward to welcoming you back next time you have a chance to stay.

Kind regards

We decided that we would like to have a high tea for our daughters birthday and booked at the Stamford Grand, asking to overlook the beachfront. Upon our arrival we were shown to the atrium area at the front of the Promenade Restaurant which over looked the lawn and beachfront. Soon after being seated we were served coffee and our high tea requirements were confirmed. Soon after our high tea was served and one of the attentive staff explained the sandwich fillings and hot food contents. Our waiter, I think his name is Chiandra, was very attentive and constantly was replenishing drinks etc. The quality of the food was of high standard, the scones were warm and very fresh. There was adequate servings and no issues with ordering extra cream. The only down side was the amount of room that we had on the table with four of us and all the food. The high tea was presented beautifully and we had a very enjoyable day. Highly recommended.

Arrived very early Saturday prepared to leave our bags and were surprised that our room was ready. Had requested a king bed (see my other reviews about bed sizes) but were given a "terrace room" with 2 doubles. Decided to leave it as we wanted to get out and explore. The terrace is only a square of roof with air conditioner vents and a table and chairs - not a plant in sight and very unappealing. Very restricted view of the ocean but we were not there for the view. Having risen at 4am to get our flight, by that evening were very tired and ready for bed by 9pm however there was a huge function in the ballroom, one floor below which was going on till midnight - the noise was really bad then there were the drunken revelers returning to their rooms. By about 1am we finally got to sleep but then amazingly, we heard hammering and furniture being moved around - lots of banging etc. Really fed up by this stage, I called reception and was told they would investigate. About 3am the noise stopped and we finally got to sleep.
Unfortunately, we had a full day of sightseeing booked for the following day and started by requesting a room change at 7am. We were only there for 2 nights so very disappointing that our stay was spoiled by the noise and having to change rooms. The manager offered to send up champagne in apology but that never arrived.
On the good side, the hotel is in a great location right by the tram in Glenelg and if you can score an ocean view, has a lovely outlook. The cocktail bar is very nice for sunset drinks (however it is advertised as place to relax, read and write but on the first night there was a roped off noisy function going on there and the lighting is so poor, you could not see to read after sunset anyway!). Good gym facilities and the pool is outdoor but protected from the wind. I would stay again but only if I could specify the room as a high floor ocean view. Reception and porters all helpful and efficient.

Dear critique17
Thank you for taking the time to post your review following your stay with us last month. I was pleased to read that your room was ready when you arrived early on the Saturday and that we were also able to accommodate your request for a room move after your first night was disturbed by noise made by other guests of the hotel and late night revellers in the local area. I can appreciate that you would have been utterly exhausted after having risen at 4am that morning and this would have been quite upsetting. I do hope you’ll grant us the opportunity to host you next time you’re in Adelaide as our friendly and professional team will happily accommodate any requests for particular rooms types, occupancy permitting.
Kind regards

Wonderful location and that's it.
One of the most tired an dated hotels we have ever seen.
There is absolutely nothing grand about it. Staff are incompetent and the door boys are just downright stupid. Stayed in a Raffles Spa Suite - obviously no-one here has been to Raffles, the room was so ugly and tired and booked through Hotel Club which advertised it as a separate lounge room - this is not the case the lounge is stuck at the end of the bed. On complaining to management we were upgraded the following night to a VIP suite - it was horrible. The hotel is incredibly noisy and the noise went right through to 4am. The breakfast was very average and the Promenade restaurant where it is served is again horrible with hose through floor tiles.

Dear David_Sydney

Thank you for taking the time to post your candid review following your recent stay. I was very disappointed to read that neither your room nor our service met with your expectations in this instance. Whilst I acknowledge that our classic decor is not to everyone’s taste I have taken your comments on board and confirm that we are planning a major refurbishment with work to commence shortly. Thanks again for your time.

The hotel is in a great location. We booked an ocean front king room. It was on the 8th floor with great views of the beach. There was a balcony but no balcony furniture. The mattress needed replacing even though the room appeared to be recently refurbished. There didn't appear to be enough staff in the restaurant at times. The $55 Saturday night seafood buffet was good but only cold seafood. Plenty to choose from and given the location and the buffet size I thought it was reasonable for the price. Although it wasn't perfect, I would stay again. Gluten free bread is available at breakfast but you have to ask for it.

Dear BrissyGirl00

Thank you for posting your review following your recent stay. I was pleased to read that you enjoyed your stay overall and took advantage of our ocean views from your room’s balcony. We choose not to furnish our balconies due to the number of children we have stay and the risks this poses. You will be pleased to note that we have already placed an order to replace the mattresses in all of our guest rooms in the lead up to our impending refurbishment. I do hope we can look forward to welcoming you back to the Stamford Grand next time you are in Adelaide.

Positives:
Location
Comfy beds
Great can do attitude from staff

Negatives:
Finding used condom wrapper under lounge - cleaners need to do more than just brush over the surface.
Pool is ok but could do with a freshen up
A little noisy through the closed glass doors when the esplanade is pumping

Overall it is more of a 3-4 star rating hotel that generally presents well, however Stamford needs to be mindful of comparable and better properties that now front the beach in glenelg. Do shop for alternate hotels, as location and competitive price may top the Stamford.

This was the third time I have stayed here over the years, business and pleasure. Glenelg has many choices now.

Dear MC

Thank you for posting your review following your stay with us in March. I was pleased to read that you found our staff’s attitude to be so positive and that you enjoyed the comfort and location we offer. Please accept my most sincere apologies that our housekeepers did not leave your room in pristine condition. I have addressed this with my Executive Housekeeper following your feedback. You will no doubt be pleased to note that we are about to embark on a full refurbishment with designs being finalised at the moment. I do hope we can look forward to welcoming you back to the Stamford Grand Adelaide in the future.

We have stayed here twice now, once in August 2012 and again in December 2012. Both times we had a twin room, which was essentially 2 double beds- perfect as you pay for the room only, not the people. Means that our 3 year old could have one bed, we have the other, and our baby in a portacot. We did have to make calls to reception on both visits as despite contact prior to our arrival, mentioning our need for a portacot upon checkin, and being told they would bring one up- it took about 5 hours for it to actually get to our room.
We stayed on the higher and mid floors and noise from adjoining rooms was never a problem.
In our December visit, we used the pool facilities also. No problems at all besides a female guest and her teenage daughter who were staying there, had invited another lady and no less than 6 other children (who were NOT staying at the hotel) to come and swim there also while the adults caught up. It go so rowdy and rough that it wasn't a pleasant or relaxing time. Not the hotels doing of course, but maybe a sign or expectation could be put up regarding kids in the pool especially if other guests are present.
Valet parking was without a hitch the first time. Second time it was self park, and some confusion at reception when we discovered our car had interior light left on and flat battery- they seemingly didnt want us to call the raa, but had no choice....

The breakfast was/is always good, can't complain. Will return again for the mere reasons of location (the access to the beach and jetty road shops/cafes/restaurants in summer, pool facilities, and breakfast.

Dear Narellech

Thank you for your review regarding your stays in August and December of last year. I was pleased to read that you enjoyed both stays and plan to return again. Our upcoming refurbishment will include our twin rooms but those double beds will be replaced with two queen size beds which will make them even more comfortable for families. I do apologise that other guests of the hotel marred your December visit and encourage you to bring this type of behaviour to our attention so we can take action at the time rather than have your relaxation disturbed. I was pleased to read that we can look forward to hosting you again in the future.

Kind regards
