“WOW - What attention to detail”
Reviewed June 24, 2008

I wanted to book somewhere special for my husband's birthday and had heard wonderful things about Vacy Hall from some friends who stayed there on their wedding night and really enjoyed the attention to detail ... like a personal greeting on the blackboard ... fresh roses in the room ... heart shaped chocolates on the pillows ... even special bride and groom printed toilet paper.

When I called to book I was asked whether it was a special occasion and I said it was my husband's birthday. I thought nothing else until we arrived and found a birthday message for Bob on the blackboard ... a birthday cake in the room with candles, birthday hats and tooters. They even had extra plates on the trolley for friends who were travelling with us so they could share in the occasion. I have done lots of travelling and this level of personal service and attention to detail is very rare. We'll be back.

We stayed at Vacy Hall looking for an alternative to local hotel accommodation and, in particular, an upmarket weekend away. The promotional material for Vacy displayed lovely rooms and common areas promising the experience of luxury and romance in a historical Toowoomba homestead. The cost of accommodation is in the higher price range and we happily paid looking forward to home orientated service. Unfortunately, our stay started and finished with hosts who were very unfriendly and made us feel like we were an intrusion or an interuption to their lifestlyle.

Instead of the grandeur of yesteryear (after meeting our inconvenienced hosts) our stay commenced with a musty smelly room in a house in need of some renovation. There was no privacy because all the windows of our "bedroom" opened on to common verandahs facing driveways on all sides. We had to close all of the long (dark) drapes in the room - which only served to exacerbate the musty flavour of our stay.

Vacy Hall is surrounded by busy roads and, as such, is not a quiet retreat. Attention to detail was scant -- there were no special touches -- just basics like room, bed and breakfast for an extra cost ---even the television (placed in a cupboard) was positioned in such a way - that made viewing impossible either from the chairs or the bed. All in all it was a very unfriendly experience in an old and weary house.

  • Liked — close to city centre
  • Disliked — old and weary house with hosts to match

We chose Vacy Hall in preference to a motel because we were seeking atmosphere and personal service.

Overall we were disappointed with the offhand manner of the hosts and the lack of facilities that one would expect of a claimed 4 star establishment.

For example:
Our suite lacked privacy and seclusion, as the curtains were inadequate.
The bathroom for our 'suite' was down the hall.
The televsion did not work, and all the host said was "people don't come here to watch televsion".
A pot of coffee and two pieces of toast incurred an additional charge of $11.50.
The 'mini-bar' comprised three bottles of local spring water, which incurred an additional charge of $3 each.
We were unable to find any communal sitting area or library.

In summary we felt that the charge of $187 plus plus was excessive for the clinical experieince.

Vacy Hall is over 100 years old and is listed on the register of the National Estate as a building of architectural significance. Furnished with an extensive collection of Australian antiques and with beautifully decorated rooms, Vacy Hall is very different to a motel experience. If guests are seeking modern facilities such as spas and cable TV then they may find a motel more suited to their needs.

The room chosen was selected by the guest because of its ability to accommodate 5 people ... including three teenage children. The guests were informed on booking, that their bathroom was across the hall and that it was exclusively for their use. This bathroom is lockable and large fluffy cotton bathrobes were provided for them to use.

Given the number of guests occupying this suite ... a private bathroom across the hall was believed to be more appropriate for their circumstances.

As a heritage-listed property, it is not possible to have an ensuite bathroom attached to every room. With 12 rooms we have 8 ensuite bathrooms and four private adjacent (not shared) lockable bathrooms.

All prices are quoted in advance along with the price of breakfast. Our pricing is flexible allowing guests to choose to have continental, full cooked or no breakfast at all.

This room is furnished with exquisite Liberty of London chintz curtaining fabric which spans gorgeous cedar bay step through windows and provides a high standard of screening and privacy if drawn.

We provide small televisions to each room for those guests who simply must have a tv ... and recently all TV cabling has been replaced to enhance the TV reception which is now excellent.

We are not a licensed property and as such provide a limited range of refreshments in the fridge of each room. Guests are only required to pay for drinks they have consumed. Our pricing is also in line with other local accommodation providers.

As a heritage listed property, we are limited structurally – so we cannot build on a communal sitting area. We do however, have a dining room with fireplace which can be used by guests at any time. We have wide wrap around verandas with tables and chairs scattered around. The Eastern lawn under the Jacaranda tree is also a large area that can be used by guests to socialise and we have croquet and boule’s games that guests can use. We encourage our guests to socialise instead of watching TV which they can do at home.

We provide tourist information on local attractions and wineries and we are happy to recommend activities / restaurants / tours etc based on our local knowledge.

Vacy Hall has featured on Great Outdoors, Getaway, South East Queensland Escapes, Queensland Weekender and has had dozens of favourable press reviews.

Vacy Hall is like a time capsule that offers guests the opportunity to step back in time to a space where things were slower and less complicated, people had more time for each other and the world was more gracious. Built as a wedding present for the daughter of a wealthy squatter and pastoralist in the 19th century, Vacy Hall now provides travellers with a romantic experience reminiscent of the glory days of the 'squattocracy' with the convenience of a CBD boutique hotel. ... more   less
