“Clarion - great value on the Marina”
Reviewed June 13, 2014

This isn't a new hotel, even though other reviews state this. It has been here for some 10 years and is about to undergo a bit of a facelift. For the money and location, I have found this hotel to be very good.
Happened to visit on a Friday and they have half price cocktails all day.. and not watered down like some others.. try the frozen strawberry daiquiris.. One drink I try at nearly every hotel I stay at, and these guys nailed it!

I stayed in an marina view queen room and for a few $$ above the base room, had an amazing view of the marina, from the top floor of the complex.
The marina offers some fantastic eating and watering venues, all at very reasonable prices for the location. Competition ensure that prices are kept down, even if at the best place to stay.. The Clarion! I definitely recommend Sails, the bar/tab/restaurant just down the road.. Heaps of locals let me know that it was the place for great food at a reasonable price. by the number of people there, it was very obvious their opinions were correct.

I ate at the Clarion, and although a little quite, was very nice food. They have created a great new cocktail menu and also some really interesting food.. Fantastic grilled haloumi, for cheese lovers, and the chef does a special dish every night, which tonight was an awesome chicken breast dish.

For Mackay, this place is very good and will definitely stay again.

If however you are expecting to stay at a 5 star hotel similar to those you find in Sydney or Melbourne, you will be dissapointed.. Mackay is a regional town, and although quite advanced for regional QLD, it isnt Crown Towers, which i would vote easily as no.1 in Australia.
Everything is relative though, and the hotel and restaurant were excellent to what i have seen in the past in Mackay and very affordable.

Enjoy!

Hi,
I would firstly like to thank you for taking the time to write a refreshing review of our Hotel and the Marina alike on Tripadvisor. We are very excited for the new direction we are taking and also for the cosmetic facelift we are going to be having in the up and coming months.
I am thrilled to hear that our cocktails are up there with the best. The views that we offer from every room are the best in Mackay.
We look forward to your next stay here.

Kind regards,
Mahina

This is a nice new clean, modern and totally dull hotel, just like a Toyota Camry.Who ever did the decorating didn't really try hard as most of the furniture ultra dull. The restuarant doubles up as a conference room so not much atmosphere there either. On a positive note, the food was excellent, the rooms were clean, spacicous and the view, if you get a room facing the harbour, is great. Ideal for business people and reps, but not the place to take your partner for a romantic stay.

I would like to say thank you for your feedback, we do take all comments on board and hopefully on a return trip you will notice the small and ongoing changes, being a 10 year old Hotel it is time for a refresh. We do have the best room and restaruant views in town and have always prided ourselves on this. I will pass on your positive review for the Restaurant to our Head Chef these comments make his day, once again thank you for taking the time out of your day for your valid comments.

We booked an Executive Spa room for our stay and our room was on Level 4 with Marina Views. I was glad to see the upholstery had been replaced since my last stay, rooms appeared freshly painted and clean.

Staff at checkin were very friendly and helpful, and the process was quick and efficient.

The most disappointing part of our stay was breakfast. We waited almost 10 minutes for the servery to be refilled, yet the restaurant was empty. Then the fruit servery was empty and I had to ask for it to be refilled - after waiting sometime and it still not being refilled we left. We weren't the only ones. It's a shame that an otherwise good stay was ruined on the morning we left due to poor service.

Room Tip: Must be Ocean Facing, no point staying at the Marina and looking at a carpark - there is nothing els...

Thank you for your return stay and also noticing the refreshing chcnges to our Executive Spa Suite.
Our Front Offcie Team pride themselves on making the check in procedure welcoming and efficent to ensure our Guests have a relaxing stay from the momnet you enter the foyer.
I do apologise if the breakfast servery wasn't to standard, this has been brought to the attention of the Head Chef and the servery will be refreshed on a more continual basis, for the expectation of our Guests.
I do appreciate the constructive feedback and belive that your next stay with us will be more enjoyable, we look forward to seeing you again.

Probably the best hotel in Mackay area, in another word, probably one of the few hotel/motel in Mackay with a bit of class, good food, good service in the restaurant, rooms are big , beds are nicec, and clean.

Downside:
**the receptionists might need a bit more training, the one checked me in barely smile, and next morning the morning one chat on the phone for ages !!
**2nd down side, location, its far from Mackay CBD, you always need a car

Good afternoon Timmy08,

We would like to thank you for your feedback, you have given great insight into the overall conditon of our Hotel, as we do consider ourselves to be the best in town.
I do apologise if you feel your check in and check out process wasn't fulfilled to your standard, this will be addressed with all the Front Office Staff, as we do strive to maintain a top service for all Guests that stay, inevitably we do strike reservation calls at all times of the day and night as we are a 24 hour Hotel.
Management are looking into a courtesy bus service to alleviate this problem and we do have a local bus service that runs to and from town.

I stayed here with family. While the room was just a room with a double and a single bed, it was clean, comfortable and very quiet. It was a home away from home located in a lovely position on the harbour with beautiful views out over the marina. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. Coffee in the downstairs lounge was delicious and served with 6 cakes for 6 dollars. Great deal. I would stay here again.

Stayed here for one night primarily because it was one of the only hotels I could find with a gym. The clarion describes it as a "fully equipped air conditioned fitness centre" which it is not - there are pieces of equipment (one of which was out of order) and some cheap kettle bells in a room about 3m x 4m. The rooms themselves are quite spacious and have everything you need. All in all it's a decent 3 star hotel, the fact it has a pool and 'gym' probably qualifies it for 4. As posts below, I was greeted with a smile by one receptionist and a scowl at best by the other.

Also people should know the restaurants adjacent to the hotel at the marina are very very overpriced ($35 for a low standard Thai meal).

My Husband decided to take me to the Clarion Marina Mackay for valentines day, We were going to stay the two nights just a nice getaway from home.. Well at least we thought. My husband booked the Valentines package witch was a spa suite a couple of weeks before valentines day the lady who picked up his call asked him would he like the Spa suite or would he like the king upgrade he agreed to the king upgrade when we arrived it was not an upgrade at all it was a small room with a semi ocean view nothing flash and outdated there was also mold in the shower and no spa not what you expect in such a expensive room. We were also promised Champagne and chocolate strawberries on arrival (this did not happen) My husband then called the front desk about the room.. Where was the spa? how is this an upgrade the lady on the phone then asked him what was wrong this is the better room, My husband replied "how!? theres no spa its a basic room with a king bed" she told us there wasn't anything she could do and that our dinner reservations were now pushed back half an hour to 9:00 we were already unpleased about the 830 but we understood it was busy. Ten mins had passed and the lady at the reception had said she talked to her big boss and he had said give us the room at a discounted price my husband then said does this still include dinner in the price she replied yes it does, My husband then questioned why the dinner had been pushed back she then put us through to the restaurant they then told us that they had over booked, Being so late my husband then asked could we please have our dinner in our room then, they said they would get back to us he then also asked where our champagne and chocolates strawberries were they told us they will be sent up in 20 minutes. Finally someone from the restaurant bought up the champagne and chocolate strawberries the man then said to us we cant have our meal sent to the room because the chef didnt want to do that.

At 9 we go down to the restaurant only to have a horrible meal it looks like they may have run out of food as some of the stuff promised on our menu wasn't on our plate. The waiter we had was very rude i assume he was over the night when we would say thankyou for our meals or drinks he would reply with "mmm"

The next day we went out and about 1:00pm we decided we just couldn't go back. We then checked out of the hotel, Checking out was a disaster the same lady who we had booked us in and gave us the discounted price then told us that it did not include the dinner. My husband tried to talk to her and explain but she just kept talking over top of him. She then charged our card for the room and the food witch in the end was not discounted. My husband asked her why she charged our card again when the amount of $740 was gone out of account since we first checked in she told us that amount was frozen and would be in our account the next day.. It was not it has now been five days since she told us that and we still have not received the "frozen" $740.

My husband then calls the "choice hotel customer relations line" only to be told "There isn't really much they can do" Thank god we know someone in the choice chain who could get a hold of there state manager. We find out that the lady who served us isn't a manager like she said but a receptionist and that she had said my husband was abusive towards her what a huge lie she wouldnt even let my husband get a word in he never raised his voice and he always said please and thankyou.. I have no idea what she classes as abusive then

Word of advice NEVER STAY AT THIS PLACE!! The grande in Mackay is much nicer and the staff are beautiful!!
