“Tell Uncle Bob I sent you!”
Reviewed February 25, 2010

Backpacking? have yourself a stay at the Larrikin....and while your there book an Eco Tour with Uncle Bob! My daughter and I were looking for a getaway on our extended vacation in Queensland. We picked Mackay and the LL we spent Friday nite dorm style at the Lodge then Uncle Bob whisked us away up into the mountains for some dawn's early light Platypus viewing. It took some patience but we finally found some of the elusive creatures....can you say amazing? Then Our Uncle Bob dropped us off at the Eungalla Chalet for a wonderful 2 night stay up in the clouds..... then our Uncle B picked us back up on Monday morn to take us to a gorge in another rain forest, we hiked our way up to find a rock pool and waterfall awaiting us.....Magnificent! went for a swim and hiked back down to be taken to the Pinnacle Hotel for a meat pie and beer! best I had in Oz.....Then back to the Lodge for our last night. Stayed in our our room that night and flew out the next morning. The Lodge is cozy, clean and friendly!

Larrikin Lodge will live long in the memory for the unstinting friendliness of the owner – he was great! The hostel itself wasn’t amazing, but clean and functional. The majority of the rooms are dorms and occupied by longer-term travellers who are working in Mackay. We stayed in a double, which was fine, although we did have to walk through a dorm room to access it, which was a little inconvenient. The kitchen is a good size and well equipped and the bathrooms were also clean, but were slightly separated from the main sleeping area. Larrikin Lodge is a good place to stay if you are looking for a cheap bed for the night. Cheers Bob!

Larrikin Lodge is quite a small but a very cosy and friendly place to stay. The main guy who works there Bob was so helpful and friendly it made quite a change! Theres a small kitchen facility, fridges and also a no-alcohol policy which was nice cos it results in a really nice chilled out, family-esque environment. Theres satellite TV available and in the evenings everyone sits around chilling and chatting. Its also very quiet but really close to shops etc.

My only slightly critical comment is that the "double room" is actually a small room thats reached by going through another small 3-bed dorm room and is separated from this room by a slidey door. The room partition doesnt reach all the way up to the cetiling so essentially you are still semi-sharing with the other people next door as you have to come and go through their room to get to yours and everything between the 2 rooms can be heard. But the super-comfy bed made up for it :)

Highly recommended.

  • Liked — The super-friendly staff and chilled out atmosphere
  • Disliked — The double room wasnt really an independant room
