“Very little reward for your money and time”
Reviewed April 20, 2012

My wife and I went there with two children aged 6 and 4. We had to walk for a long way to find the mine and then when we got there we were unsure as to where we could dig. The fence was not very safe if a child leaned on it I think it would have fallen over and in some places they could have crawled under it. We found the ground hard to dig and there was someone from a different group there who dug a sizeable hole and didn't find anything. It was very poorly organized and the staff were not very helpful. Most of what we found was not big enough to cut (and you had to pay extra for the rock to be cut) and I think after it is closed they take everything that is not taken home just dumped back in the mine for someone else to pick through. I would not go back again and would not recommend it to other young families to go there.

We wish for you to acknowledge the reviews received since new management took over in December 2014 and we would like to express how much we appreciate this encouragement. We have made a lot of positive changes here since then we took over. Our staff are, as described in many of the more current reviews, extremely polite and helpful and very knowledgeable. Prices have been reviewed and the fossicking experience is now a lot more affordable. We look forward to welcoming many new and previous ‘miners’ and to assure you that we will endeavour to give you a great day out.

“Terrible”
Reviewed April 8, 2012

Found staff extremely unfriendly. Grossly overpriced. You pay a small fortune to go and dig up dirt. Only very basic instructions given and no staff provided at site to actually help you identify correct rocks. To add insult to injury if you find one they CHARGE you even more money to cut it in half. An absolute rip off

“Test of patience”
Reviewed December 16, 2011

A different way to spend a couple of hours picking though an old lava flow for the elusive 'Thunder Egg'. Fairly expensive for what it is but a good test of patience for the kids as they pick though the gravel looking for an egg amongst tonnes of slurry and rock. Hard to know what your looking for and very hot on the mountain slope so take plenty of water.

We found a couple of small rocks which turned out to be eggs and when cut open were quite attractive. A oncer!

“scam!!!”
Reviewed November 6, 2011

Don't bother, it was the biggest waste of time and money, you walk up a steep hill, dig in the hot sun in an old open mine that has nothing worthwhile left in it and you pay $$$ for the pleasure, we had three small children who had to walk for ages to get to drinks and the toilet, it is dangerous and slippery, the owners should be ashamed of themselves!! cant discribe enough what a pack of low lives these "buisness opperators" are!

“Thunderegg Mine - don't bother”
Reviewed April 2, 2011

Our Family 2 kids & 2 Adults visited the Thunderegg Mine today after paying $78 to fossick in the mine. After about an hour of picking through compacted rocks and clay you come out with a handful of eggs which depending on the size cost anything from $4- plus to cut open. With the eggs we found it equalled paying $35 per stone per person for the experience!!! Save yourself the money and buy something in the shop, as the experience of the "mine" is very underwhelming! the owners should be embarassed. Total scam.
