“Best place to have some me time in the sunshins”
Reviewed November 7, 2009

I had a lovely two-week stay - needed some "me-time". I thoroughly enjoyed all the facilities on offer including the lovely pool, the spa, sauna and gym. I went for many long walks on the beautiful beach - that is when I wasn't enjoying the spectacular view from my very private balcony. The room was very clean and all the facilities were in top condition - I could even watch the ocean whilst I had a shower - brilliant!! The staff were friendly and helpful although very busy because this is a popular destination for families, couples, etc. This hotel is seconds from many and varied eateries and cute shops. However, if you want to cook your own, a large shopping centre with two major supermarkets is only 10 minutes walk (Tweed Mall). If you want somewhere to stay on the Gold Coast, forget Surfers (yuk) and try Coolangatta.

After our stay at this hotel, we wrote this letter of complaint to send to them:

Recently we came and stayed at the Coolangatta branch of the Mantra hotels for 8 days, during which we did the regular holiday activities that one would do whilst in the gold coast.

This trip was planned as part of an engagement celebration and birthday and your hotel was booked online with a shown rating of 4.5 stars. A number of events and findings over our stay made us question your displayed rating. We would also like to point out that it was not a complete lack of competence in all of your staff as a couple of them were quite helpful in a particular situation. If we had not prepaid online we would have changed hotels mid stay. Listed below are some of the things we thought were worth mentioning, taking into account how much it costs to stay at your hotels:

We booked our stay 3/4 weeks in advance and on the application we were able to select an arrival time of 10:30am. Our flight arrived at 8:30am (on time) from there we picked up our rental car at 9:30 (on time) and drove the one or so hours to your hotel. We arrived exactly at 10:30am only to find that our room wasn’t anywhere near ready. In fact it took a grand total of three hours before we were able to gain access. We were hot and over dressed as we flew in from New Zealand and needed a change of clothes, which we ended up having to do in the underground car park of your establishment.
However this is no reflection on the staff at the front desk as they tried to help and were genuinely nice about the whole affair.

Once eventually getting access to our room, we were both in desperate need of a shower. To our amazement we found black/dark green substances growing in the corners of the shower. Photos are included. We expected after being kept waiting for three hours that these sorts of things would have been dealt with. However we discovered that as well as the shower the oven and top shelves had undesirably dirty appearances. The oven was caked in previously cooked substances, photos are included. We ended up spending the good part of an hour scrubbing just one of the trays so we could use it. The top cupboard above the fridge had scatterings of crumbs throughout it, photos provided.

On your website and even in your brochure that sits in your rooms you state that stainless steel appliances are provided. However unless I am mistaken white plastic is not classed as stainless steel as that’s what your appliances were constructed out of.

Once gaining access to our room and boycotting the shower we decided to change before going out again as the car park only provided temporary relief. We noticed that on the right hand side there was a nice net curtain provided which we drew. We then went to draw the left hand side only to discover that it was non existent, forcing us to draw the light blocking curtains.

This is not our first time staying in the gold coast and in all our previous stays the air conditioning unit was able to cool to any desired temperature as Brisbane is not one of the cooler places you can be. However upon reading your hand book we discovered that the air conditioning unit was not able to handle anything less then 22 degrees, which is heat wave in Christchurch New Zealand (where we reside).

During our stay over a couple of days there were strong winds, which is to no fault of your hotel. However during the time we spent in our room i.e. trying to sleep. We discovered that the mixture of the way your sliding doors are constructed and high winds cause a rather irritating gushing and whistling noise.

To accompany this, your lifts cease to function in high winds. Not wanting to test the lifts to much in this scenario we chose to take the stairs. On encountering the stairs we discovered they were not lit which during periods where the lift is not functioning we thought was absolutely stupid as there is no windows to provide any light what so ever. We attempted to go back to our room only to find that the door to get back into the hotel was firmly locked. This forced us to walk down the flights of stairs from the forth floor in complete and utter darkness. The only assistance that we had, were the tiny amounted of light emitted by our cell phones which we luckily remembered. This still did not however stop one of us from nearly tripping and falling down the solid concrete steps in the darkness.

We have stayed in 3 star hotels that have provided, as part of your stay, a daily complimentary turn down service. So being a 4.5 star hotel we were rather shocked that it costs $40 a day to receive the same service that we have previously got for free.
We noticed that the rooms came with available safes which we thought was a great idea. We attempted to use it as directed but found that the door would not shut. After reading your handbook about the safe, we were very surprised to find it costs and additional $3 per day. This was not stated when the booking was made on your website and we found it quite annoying considering we didn’t book the cheapest hotel in the area. At previous hotels this was included free of charge. To boot when the safe was not in use it continuously jammed the wardrobe door with its own.

Overall we did not think that your hotel deserved the 4.5 star rating as we have stayed in 3 star hotels with better services and cleaner facilities and we were very disappointed to find this out. Upon choosing our next hotel when staying in the gold coast we will make sure that it will not be the Mantra on Coolangatta. When being asked where to stay by friends and family you will be guarantied not to be recommended.

We honestly hope you can get your act together as this will probably not be the last letter from dissatisfied customers that stayed at your hotels.

We were so disappointed with the place that we couldn’t even bring ourselves to post the letter to them. We just wanted to put the whole thing behind us.

First time in Coolangatta so we were quite nervous about just how good the hotel would be - having been lured by false advertising before. Much to our delight it was absolutely perfect! Beautiful views, fantastic room & balcony, full amenities, courteous & helpful staff & an unexpected nice touch with lovely bathing products. The only negative experience we had was eating at Bellakai, the cafe next door. Overpriced, bad food & even worse service. Everywhere else we ate was great. We also checked out the hotels either side of us & found we had the best value for money at the Mantra.

  • Liked — The view.
  • Disliked — The movie charge.

Nice Hotel great spot close to everything. Hotel room was also goo although at night you had to have doors closed as there was too much noise for a young family even though we were on the 11th Floor. Beware!!!!! they charged us $25 extra for picking up the used towels and vacuming the floor and mangement did not really wish to talk about it, perhaps it was because we had booked a discounted rate.

Very friendly staff, jaw-dropping, unbelievable view - great access to a beautiful beach, very nice two bedroom apartment, building could do with a 3rd lift during peak times, great access to excellent eateries nearby, wonderful beach walks. We've stayed there many times over 6 years and have never had a problem. Overall excellent value for money and really close to the airport for quick arrival and departure. Much better than going up into Surfers which is crowded and overdeveloped.

Carpets were stained, TV reception was terrible, sofas had stains and tears in them. Inside of windows looked like a toddler had been at them with dirty hands and hadn't been cleaned since. We had a two bedroom apartment on the 12th floor (1201) on a corner of the building and high winds for the first two nights. The wind set up resonance in the verandah railing which made a howling noise - very disturbing.
For the price there are much better options around.

Coolangatta is still the best place to stay on the Gold Coast, just maybe stay in another aprtment. We had a 3 Bedroom self contained apartment, it was a side apartment, which meant we had a very small balcony, with three chairs for an apartment that sleeps 6 people, so no breakfast on the balcony. The 2 single beds were the skinniest beds I have ever seen, my teenagers ended up sleeping on the floor as they kept rolling out. The lounge only had room to seat 5 skinny people, we arent skinny, so usually one child had to sit on the floor. The kitchen has one very tiny frypan, and a few small saucepans, and a great oven if you dont open it, if you do the smoke detectors go crazy and set off all the alarms. The Carpark also had some leakage problems when we were there causing several slips in greasy puddles. On the Plus side the location is great, the pool is good, the gm is great and the staff are lovely friendly and helpful.
