Down on the Gold Coast in Coolangatta for another weekend and had to try the number one restaurant in the area: Bellakai.

Once again, a long lunch, so probably a different feel to a dinner experience.

Bellakai is in a fantastic location, right opposite the beach with a decent street frontage eating area. If this was Bondi it would be worth an absolute fortune. Rent probably expensive here too. Although, I note it's attached to The Mantra, so maybe that's the answer.

Service at the start was a little mixed from the backpacker but once the professional staff took over was fantastic.

The menu is all seafood seafood seafood which is fine by us, but you can still get a chook or a cow too.

We went the seafood share plate for entree which was fantastic. The little pieces of pan fried whiting was the standout for R, but I thought the plain old natural oysters won the day for me. Very fresh, very oystery, just perfect with a little lemon and salt. The prawns tempura were great also. The tempura light and crunchy. We could have stopped here really.

I ordered a second entree of roast pumpkin ravioli in some sort of red sauce. It was supposed to have some type of nuts in it but I didn't see any. Was a very decent serve for an entree size. Nice one.

R ordered the 'fish of the day' which was a King Fish and well exceeded expectations. Was beautifully cooked and presented. R was so full at this point that she handed the dish over to me to finish and we didn't even consider eating the tempura mushrooms that seemed to shock the waitress. Perhaps they were supposed to be a highlight. They did look pretty impressive. Sorry Chef.

Of course, I had to check out the toilet to get the full picture, and I have mixed thoughts. As you walk in they've obviously gone to some effort with the hand washing mirror part, but the loo itself is a disgrace. Replace the old plastic seats with something solid and clean the cistern! A few hundred buck investment will take you to the next level Bellakai.

Overall, really great lunch. Terrific value.

My wife and had a Valentines Day dinner which exceeded all expectations. Often in holiday towns (we are local residents) you get overpriced meals with poor service. In our case our three course meals were excellent - Asian style belly pork, seared tuna, coconut prawns followed up by very decadent deserts. Excellent quality wines either by the glass or bottle with very friendly wait staff. I can undertand some of the other reviewer's comments as Coolangatta can become very busy during the peak holiday season. I would rate this as a five star meal served in a simple setting by very good wait staff. Price wise it is not the place for a cheap family meal but it does offer a great alternative to the upper end restaurants located on the northern end of the Gold Coast at Main Beach and Broadbeach. We will definately be back again and especially recommend Bellakai to other residents of the southern end of the Gold Coast and Tweed Heads..

I have been to this restaurant 5 times now and find the food quality to be hit and miss. Dinners are generally very good, however, DO NOT go for lunch and the serving side is very small and not very good flavours.

We dined there twice in twenty four hours. First as a special birthday dinner in a group of four, and then a larger group for breakfast the next morning. Both meals were good, with friendly and prompt service. The dinner menu is fairly expensive but the food is well prepared and presented, with a range of dishes to choose from. Not outrageous at all considering the beachfront location.

Breakfast was standard fare, but with nice fresh-squeezed juices and good coffee.

Lots to choose from on menu and lovely seafood taster plate to start off a great dining experience. Salmon main extremely yummy and the Guinness pie was the best ever - busy restaurant but service good with attentive wine and water fill ups. Dessert slightly disappointing. Always annoying when plates collected when some diners in party still eating - but small area of complaint in otherwise great night out. Waitress great and looked after us well - even moving our adult group away from original seating next to large group of children - this was much appreciated and great initiative to keep experience good.
