“pretty impressive for first timers”
Reviewed February 4, 2012

neither me & my friends ever stayed in a hostel before, we can conclude that it was not a bad experience. the beds are comfortable & clean. we were lucky enough to have the whole dorm to just the 3 of us since I believe it was a low season, thanks to Ian, the Manager for that. the kitchen are pretty much complete, clean toilets too. we loved the free breakfast as well.gorgeous beach is just a stone throw away and they got interesting places to visit nearby which include the currumbin wildlife sanctuary.its really easy to get on busses there which can bring u everywhere!some of the hostel staffs I have to say, were not so friendly but totally different case with the locals there.

WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT!!! to look at it the sands has got everything in place to make a great hostel experience but manages to disappoint on every single level.the atmosphere amongst the staff and backpackers alike would not be out of place at a funeral, however, logistically it works, security doors and north facing reception booth is a great comfort so not to allow any freeloaders or riff raff up stairs with the paying guests. The rooms themselves although small and without any immediate facilities serves its purpose and also accommodates a lockable cupboard to keep your belongings safe and ensures peace of mind when your out enjoying the day. the kitchen is nothing short of amazing with every thing you need to prepare meals. there are two bathrooms that are easily accessible and internet and a television room, that gives direct access to a common balcony that spans about 90% of the front, allowing everyone a great view of the beach and street frontage . downstaris there is a sports bar which is part of the building and again to the right is a restaurant which also is part of coolangatta hotel. The biggest disappointment comes with the anal and socially repressed attitudes of the manager and most of the staff, there is the odd occasion when you do get a smile (but i think they cost extra so be careful you don't use all your smiles up on the one day or you might end up being out of pocket) Dont worry though because nobody smiles or has any fun at the sands so if your unfortunate enough to have a Sunni disposition your mood will be soon darkened and you'll fit right in with the rest of the gloomy sods that wander the halls of this miserable place . So in short, yes it has everything you want and its clean and its a stones throw from the beach but personally i think id rather spend a holiday at the Gaza strip then go back to the sands.

We stayed for one night in a private room. The room itself was bare bones, just a bunk bed and cupboards (lockable) for storage, but it was very clean and the mattresses were comfortable. Sheets, pillows and blankets were provided, and the air conditioner worked very well. The noise level was pretty bad, but it was on a Friday night close to New Years so it probably isn't that bad all of the time. The bathrooms were also very clean with hot water. Hopper the manager was very helpful and nice.

This is the loudest place you will ever try to sleep in. The large communal balcony is accessed from each of the rooms and the doors to it may as well not be there. You further pay for the incredibly good and central location by being above, across and next door to bars and they are open late. Although itself not a party hostal it is in the middle of every other place's party with no insulation from the sound. Still, the rooms and common areas ae clean and good facilities.

On a summer weekend, the pub downstairs might change things, but for me this was one of the best hostels I stayed in.

It's really well designed with big modern rooms, clean toilets and showers, a massive laundry kitchen.

It's right in the centre of town as well and meters away from the beach.

The welcome from the girl on reception was frosty at best, but that was the only downside

If you want to get away from the party scene of Byron Bay and Gold Coast this is a great option.
In a great location this place was really quiet, which is very strange for a hostel. It's located on top of a pub and minutes from the beach and cafes.
Showers and toilets are clean, good size kitchen and a great balcony to enjoy your breakfast before heading for a surf.
