“Very enjoyable”
Reviewed April 11, 2013

I have dined at a number of degustation restaurants both in Sydney and abroad, I found the food excellent, the range of dishes varied and the wines very well matched HOWEVER, I did find the staff a little pompous in attitude and presumptious as the first waitress assumed we would have our venasin medium rare "of course you will have it medium rare" and the wine waitress while sounding extremely knowedgable on the wines when I asked a few questions I realised the information is rehearsed and not from personal experience and doing courses. (Obviously staff have their speel out the back to study before coming out). Apart from these couple of things, would recommend this restaurant.

“Lovely Haute Cuisine”
Reviewed March 21, 2013

I have just returned from abroad after 2 years and again enjoyed my meal at Caveau. The menu has changed to what I remember a few years ago and the service has setlled to something more subtle and relaxed. The food was excellent as was the wine matching. the degustation was the way to go to get the flavours of the season. I would comment that the decor is not great and the service can be somewhat too 'stiff' so teh overall atmosphere was not the best.... otherwise a loevey meal. thank you

“Degustation won out in the end!”
Reviewed March 14, 2013

My dining companions were certain and vocal that they did not want to go the degustation menu path but it certainly represented the best experience and ultimately best value in the end! It was outstanding and worth the trip to the Gong! All dishes were freshly sourced from local sources and the staff did an excellent job in explaining each dish. Well Done and Thanks!

“Surprise fine restaurant in Wollongong”
Reviewed March 5, 2013

Thank heavens for the internet and review forums like tripadvisor. It informs us of these sort of special places that you just wouldn't otherwise find. In sleepy Wollongong, behind an unattractive shopfront, in a less than elegant dining room, the food here was very, very good - think of fine establishments in Sydney, New York, Boston, Chicago - some of the very best and this place does not disappoint. And so too is the service very decent. It's not cheap at about $80pp for 3 courses fixed price - or $95 for a 7 course degustation. The chef, Peter Shepherd, is formerly from fine dining establishment, Banc, in Sydney which was then a 3 chef hatted restaurant - a very talented chef. Together with his staff, the team serve an excellent dinner. The slightly less than salubrious surroundings are relatively unimportant in the scheme of things.

“Fine dining in downtown Wollongong”
Reviewed March 2, 2013

Caveau is a SMH, "one chef's hat" restaurant located in the Wollongong CBD. I visited on a weekday evening and enjoyed a lovely 3 course dinner for a very reasonable price. There was also an option for a degustation menu. (I beleve that the 3 course a la carte is not available on weekends). The food was fresh and well-presented and as good as any fine dining restaurant in the big cities. The highlight of my meal was a delicious lamb rump, cooked beautifully. The wait staff were friendly and service was efficient. I would most definitely return to this restaurant!
