Best Western City Sands
Ranked #5 of 15 Hotels in Wollongong
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 30, 2011

Stayed for 2 nights at Best Western City Sands on business in the area during June. This place is basically the golf club 19th hole. Unfortunately, didn’t get to play the course so can’t comment on the golf.

When checking in the reception seemed a little odd as we were welcomed in and checked in by the security staff. No actual receptionist appeared to exist. Nothing wrong with the service (in fact better than the receptionist in the morning) but just a bit off putting. Gives the impression that times are hard or they have significant security issues.

Stayed in a regular no frills room and on the wrong side of the hotel so no views over the course or the ocean. No doubt this would make a huge difference to your experience if you were here for the golf or holidaying. But being here for business during the shortest days of the year this didn’t make too much of an impact.

The room itself was efficient. A kitchenette if you needed it but no mini bar if you are used to one. Large enough room space but annoyingly where the work space has been set up there are no easily accessible power points - my battery pack made it across the room to the opposite wall but became a trip hazard getting to the balcony door - strange! TVs with Foxtel in lounge and bedroom area although TV in bedroom was a dinosaur.

Bathroom appeared to have been recently refurbished and was clean and well presented although the water pressure from the shower seemed to have taken the environmental factor just a bit too far.

The bistro area seemed to be lightly frequented whilst I was there but for the days of the week this was not surprising. I did not eat at the bistro but people who had gave it an “OK” rating with "typical bistro food" type comments. There is an outdoor area with great views but too cold at this time of year. In the summer this would be excellent. There is also a bar, tab and gaming area - typical of a golf club 19th hole. The bar staff do get a round of applause as they were friendly and happy to have a chat whilst providing good service.

So would I stay here again. Yes I think I would although I would stay on the view side of the hotel. Is it a great hotel? Not quite. A professional reception area at all times would make it feel more like a proper hotel and I am afraid the workspace not having accessible plugs let this place down just a bit.

Room Tip: Pay a little extra and get the view

We stayed in an Ocean View Room and loved the view - overlooking the golf course and the Pacific Ocean. Rooms are great - plenty of room and nicely decorated. Rooms have a sep. bedroom and also a Sofa Bed so can sleep 4 comfortably. Staff were great - especially the blonde haired gentleman who was in charge of our floor - he went out of his way to help us . We could walk to Win Entertainment Centre for a concert or the St George Dragons Win Stadium to watch the rugby league. City Sands is also in walking distance to restaurants and Crown Central Shopping Centre. We will be back.

Room Tip: Ocean View rooms have best outlook

We stayed one night and totally enjoyed our stay. The staff is friendly, rooms neat & clean, did not have a room facing the golf course this time but have stayed before and the view is magnificent.

Thoroughly enjoyed our 1night stay in a 1b/r apartment on the 3rd floor room 303 with commanding views over the golf course to the ocean beyond. Everything in the room met with our requirements. While some have complained about the noise from early golfers & the bar we could not even though there were golfers out on the course. We dined in the restaurant & the meals were very good. Staff most courteous & attentive from check in to restaurant to check out. There is keyless security for the accommodation but no secured car park. Therefore my only complaint would be the car park which at times was hard to find a space due to the golfers & we can appreciate the fact that there are more golfers than guests but maybe some dedicated car spaces for accommodation guests would be handy

I booked here for 2 nights last minute on my way back to Sydney based on trip advisor. Our room turned out to be a bedroom suite with a huge balcony that overlooked the golf course and ocean. The hotel is part of the golf club. The room was large with small kitchen, bedroom and large bathroom. The restaurant and bar are part of the golf club and the food was reasonably priced and very good. One of the evenings there was a Trivia Night. We were welcomed by the host and he took pity on the fact that as Candians we were at a disadvantage with the Aussie questions. Everyone was very friendly and we really enjoyed ourselves. The hotel seemed to be more in an industrial and residential area and not very much around. I had thought that the hotel had a pool and was disapointed not to find one. It is really a group of rooms attached to a golf club. I enjoyed the slot machines at the hotel. In Canada they are only in Casinos.

The hotel itself was decent, no more than I expected as it was relatively cheap compared to the others. However staff were disappointing, not helpful and had attitude problems.
Wouldn't stay there again, but if your just after a bed it will do.
