“Enjoyable experience”

What a fantastic place to visit! When we first went in there were two groups of school children who were very noisy, so we asked the lovely staff if we could come back later on that day. They were very obliging and understanding so we returned in the afternoon. There's so much history on display there and you can even dress up in the gowns and take your own photos. It's like the tardis!; much bigger inside than it looks and you could spend a good couple of hours if you wanted. Very central and easy to find and staff were exceptionally welcoming. Thank you!

Learned a lot here, great displays and information. Quite fascinating to realise what was going on in this town not so long ago.

“Excellent, worth a visit”
Reviewed January 8, 2014

I loved this museum and stepping back in time. Everything in this museum is from Port Mac. You need 1 to 2 hours to enjoy it thoroughly in my opinion. It covers the history of the area, including uniforms and dresses, baby/infants clothing and accessories, farming equipment, dentistry tools and telephonic items, just to name a few on display. It's just wonderful and varied so worth a visit to see how early settlers/convicts lived, what they produced through their hard labour, their ability and wonderful workmanship.

“Your Country Historical Society Museum”
Reviewed January 4, 2014

This small country historical society museum has never been able to lift itself out of the good amateur attempt bracket. A lot of the items and artifacts on display are important and historically significant in the story of white settlement in Australia. Port Macquarie was, after all, a penal settlement of some significance and eventually a free settlement with some interesting touches, like wineries, sugar cane production. Port Macquarie had a nice wide and deep navigable river which gave access to timber further upstream. So there is an interesting story to be told. The collection is housed in an old convict built building that was lived in until quite recently by an old family in the district. There are rooms set up as they were mid 20th Century. This is a Museum worth visiting, but with a bit of appropriate funding this could be so much better. And safer. Sadly, over the years there have been some losses of valuable and important items, but I guess that's a risk that goes with the budget within which it has to operate.
