Owner description: It is fascinating to visit this historical church built by convicts 1824 - 1828 and gain an appreciation of the culture of the times by taking a guided tour. This church is still a place of worship.

Well worth a look in, actually they run tours of the church which unfortunately I didn't get to do, however I did attend a Sunday service which was great.

“Really worth a visit”
Reviewed December 18, 2013

It may not have stunning stained glass windows, or soaring cathedral ceilings, but St Thomas has cedar pews for convicts that many other places are unlikely to copy.

An interesting church, it is a different world inside with an elevated pulpit. One can access the organ and choir stalls from a fine staircase, and then a rooftop tower via a set of sturdy ladders. The view of the town and the river alone is worthwhile.

Run by volunteers, it is worth seeking out the times when the church is open for inspection.

“Couldn't get inside on the weekend - doors locked”
Reviewed October 30, 2013

Given a lot of tourist traffic is on the weekend, we were dissapointed to only be able to walk around the outside. We were tryinmg to follow up on family history, but could only get to Port Macquarie on the weekend, so I guess St Thomas stays of the itinerary for future visits as well.

“Stunning old church”

Beautiful and extremely old church - I attended a wedding there, what an amazing backdrop. Extremely old and tall church on hill top in the centre of Port Macquarie.

“A bit of history in Port”
Reviewed August 30, 2013

Perched atop a hill in the main centre of Port Macquarie, St Thomas church is an impressive structure and reputed to be the 3rd oldest church still standing in Australia. Considering that Port Macquarie was, soon after the European settlement of Australia, one of the first penal settlements, one can imagine the stories the church could tell. Well worth a look.
