“A great place to stay.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 14, 2012

We were in a lovely deluxe room overlooking the pool and river. The room was set out well so that using the bathroom or kitchenette didn't disturb anyone sleeping. You also couldn't hear any noise from neighbours, in particular you couldn't hear any shower or toilets operating. The pool area was great although some additional umbrellas wouldn't go astray. It's an easy walk to shops and entertainment. The staff were very helpful. I was able to keep my kayak in a vacant conference room. The jetty at the front was handy and I was also able to walk my kayak 150m north or south to launch it. The internal/external Koi Carp pool and the big water dragons (lizards) that sometimes sat around it provided additional interest. We thought that Sails was amongst the best of this type of accommodation that we have stayed in. We will be back for sure.

Room Tip: Pay extra for a water view room.

I had a really good night here with my husband, we stopped in for the night during a long road trip from Sydney to the Gold Coast. I got the room at short notice during the peak season for $199 on wotif.com so I guess that's what you get under those circumstances. The room was pretty average but the pool was great and we had a fair few long island ice teas from the bar which were top notch and set the pace for the night. The Nightlife in Port MacQuarie is a little slow but we had a good night and wandered back to the room which only took 10 minutes or so. If you book in advance you could probably get a better rate but I wasn't bothered. My husbands only gripe was that he felt the place was a retirement home, no one under 40 anywhere to be seen. No hot chicks by the pool.

Room Tip: Get something that doesn't look onto the carpark, not sure what those prices are though.

Relaxed atmosphere....staffs are not very friendly...the rooms are quite small but nice views.

Booked a waterfront room, didn't realise its actually poolfront as in meters from the pool so we were woken by the sound of kids every morning. There is very little privacy, the tables of the bbq area faced right into our room. The rooms on the otherside face the carpark. We booked a king room but the bed was only a queen. Reception staff are very hit and miss, I had a simple query about the tv (there is supposed to be austar but only about 4 channels worked) and they couldn't answer and promised to get back to me but never did. We also wanted to use the kayaks they provide but they also never got back to us to let us know they were free. This place is far to small to be called a resort everything is crammed in. Payed almost $250 a night, next time ill stay near the beach.

Enjoyed the location and the hotel-onsite restaurant was a little expensive but plenty of choice walking distance nearby.

Room Tip: View over the water and the pool is best- rooms open out onto the pool terrace

If you have a partner and three children you have probably noticed that the hospitality industry seems to think that a family is two adults and two kids. Most hotel booking sites insist that a family of five requires two rooms. This is why my family loves Sails Resort. We attended a festival in Port Mac in January and found we couldn't book in at the place we had previously stayed, and where we had to book two rooms at $100 each. On the off chance, I checked Sails website and found we could get a family room, with a water view, for $180. I had read some bad reviews of the place online, so I was prepared to be disappointed. Instead, we loved it. The room was on the first floor and overlooked the garden and pool. It had a queen and two singles and we had a trundle bed brought in. This was fine for our six year old and the room was big enough to fit it the extra bed (but check to make sure the trundle bed has all the required springs). Not that we spent much time in the room - the kids loved the pool. It is true that the resort is old and you can find faults if you look for them. There are chipped tiles and old carpet and fittings etc. However, for accommodation for a family of five in Port Mac I think it is great value.
We came back in October. This time we stayed on a Saturday night and they had a private function in the restaurant. We payed slightly more for the room but to compensate for us not being able to eat dinner in the restaurant (like that was going to happen!) we were given a cheap rate for breakfast the next morning. I think all up we paid about $209 for accommodation and full buffet breakfast for five in the restaurant on Sunday morning. That was outstanding value, especially in comparison to getting two adjoining rooms down the road for $100 each without breakfast. The breakfast was great - hot and cold food, juices and reasonable espresso from an automatic machine and a beautiful outlook over the water and marina.
If you have a family and want to stay in a swanky resort and pay through the nose, there are other options in Port Macquarie. If you are happy to share a room with the kids at a place where the kids are mainly interested in splashing around in the pool and you can sit somewhere very pleasant and sip a cold drink and watch them, Sails Resort is excellent value. The check-in was efficient and the staff were pleasant an friendly. There is also a playground and mini-golf course and a large shopping centre just across the road. Wireless broadband was free in January but was an additional fee in October. This was disappointing, but at the rate I paid for accommodation and breakfast I wasn't going to grumble.
