Halfway through a camperven road trip we needed a special dinner to spoil ourselves. All reviews pointed to Roberts when in the hunter valley.
The building itself is fantastic and really set a good atmosphere.
We had a trainee waiter looking after us at first and while he had good intentions did not make us feel we were at a top shelf restaurant. A more competent waitress took our orders but was not amazing despite being nice. It's funny how these things only seem to matter when you are paying over $40 per main, but they do
onto the food... We shared the calamari to start, it was a bit tough but the simple flavours worked well otherwise. A little disappointment.
We then had lamb assiette and venison on crispy polenta for mains the lamb was just perfect with generous but not obscene servings. The venison was cooked properly as medium rare and while the flavours were quite nice, this dish was well behind the lamb. The sides of chips and vegetables were relatively inexpensive and generous in size but nothing to write home about otherwise.
Unfortunately we had no room for dessert because they looked pretty great
overall we were expecting a lot but were left a little disappointed. I would probably go back but after trying several others in the area first...and I'd have the lamb!
Calamari bit tough
